Does anyone know if this is any good for labeling dvds with a metallic top? In other words, is this the kind of thing that makes a sticky label that you can stick on top of the dvd? And if so, is this one decent, or is there a better one? Or are they even worth getting at all? Having dvds with blank tops and just a name written on them is kind of boring, so I was looking for an alternative without having to pay extra for the dvds with a paper top.

The one you're looking at appears to be just for doing "business card" type discs - the little funny-looking ones that are flat on two sides. There are kits to do regular size discs.

As far as whether labels are good or not is a hotly debated topic. Personally I don't mess with them anymore. I used to use them but I found thay can unbalance the discs as it spins and cause read errors plus after awhile the ones I used started to peel up at the edges and look pretty crappy. I sympathize with you when you say blank tops with just a name aren't as snazzy as a label but I found the labels were more hassle than they were worth.Here's a huge thread on the subject:

The best and highest quality method foe labeling discs is a printer that prints directly to a printable discs, but of course you need to invest in a new printer for that. I know Epson makes one and I think another manufacturer makes one now but I can't remember who - not enough coffee yet :)
