So I'm thinking about getting a premium 360, the 60gb model. I want to be able to play burned games on it, but apparently all the new 360's have Lite-on drives which are unflashable as of now.
If I have am correct, I have two options"
1: Get an old xbox 360 used from ebay or craigslist.
2: Buy another drive and put it into my 360.

Since I want to be able to return my 360 should anything go wrong, #2 seems like the better option. I also don't trust a used console 2 days from RROD.

So assuming I'm going to buy a brand new premium xbox 360, I'm curious about how to go about getting the new drive to put in.
Where do I get this new drive from? How do I put it into the Xbox 360 so that it recognizes it properly, how do I flash THAT drive to work in that 360? Would it be easy enough at some point to stick the Lite-on drive back in?

Also, what do you guys think is my best option here?

Thanks

you cannot go with #2 because you need the drive key from the lite-on, and it requires extensive work (not for the fainthearted).

your only option is to get a used 360, or get lucky and find old stock.

ps2: v7 scph-39001 - independence exploit - hdloader 0.8c - maxtor 300gb hdd
(+[__]%) psp slim ta-085v1: 6.60 PRO B10
wii (powered by bootmii/priiloader): 4.1u - d2x v10beta53-alt (base 56) - configurable usb loader v70r51/devolution r188 - wd scorpio black 7200rpm 320gig w/ ams venus ds2 enclosure

got a whole lot more to list . . .

So it is not possible to get the drive key from the Lite-on?

you can get the drive key; people at xbox scene have spoofed the drive, but like i said, it's not for the fainthearted. requires soldering to the mobo.

props to PS2Menace for the link in THIS thread.

Figure 20GB to keep three games installed at any one time. That leaves 40GB, of which 33GB should be free. That's over 2.5x the space of the 13GB that comes free on a 20GB. That's a lot of breathing room. You should be able to install six game discs and still have as much free space as comes on a virgin 20GB.

valrossie, did you mean to post on this thread or what?
Are you saying I can play backed up games off of the 60gb hard drive?

no. the hard drive install is for only original games, because they require a disc check before it can be booted. it's gonna come in the new dashboard.

and according to other members, it is completely useless because it will only be effective to older games.

I feel like this topic completely changed. Are we still talking about the same thing? (Lite-on drive)
Original meaning original xbox games, like halo 2?

Can some games be played from the 360 hard drive? I downloaded Halo 3, if I put it on the hard drive would it work?

bottom line yes you can do both things, but option two is very very hard and if flashing sounded confusing to you then you might as well forget option 2.

Go for option 2 if you can find a store that does it. A stores changing my lite on to a samsung and flashing it for 90$.
