I just found this forum and from what I have seen there is tons of great information here. I have been trolling and seem to sort of have an idea of where I am going but need some help filling in the blanks.
What I want to do is back up my 200+ DVD collection to a hard drive on my computer. I have a 1TB unit dedicated to get this project started.
In addition, I want to be able to watch these movies via my Xbox360's.
My computer runs WinXP Pro... So no media center solutions please.
I would also like to save the files in a format that can be read by the 360 with out having to use a program like Tversity.
Maybe I set it up wrong, but it takes forever to "transcode" and start playback.
So far I have downloaded DVD Decrypter.
I ripped in File mode to 1 VOB file.
But how do I get from here to having it show up on the 360?
Can I just rename the .VOB to .MPG?
This doesn't seem to work
I would like to maintain surround sound and as good of video quality as possible. File size is not important.
I have the 360 and WMP11 configured and working.
Just need to know how to get the movies in a readable format.

I'm not 100% but I'm pretty sure any external HD over 60gb or something close to that is not recognizable by the 360. I just have all my movies in AVI format and saved on a 30gb HD that I can view them from my 360 on. I had to download a codec from the Marketplace though in order for the videos to play.
yea you cant just rename the file, the only thing i could tell you to do is just get a media converter and convert the vob to different formats until one works. but is surrounds sound in that .vob file? i know there are some ppl on here that can help a little more than me on this, i dont mess with the media really.

Without XP MCE, you may be out of luck. If you don't want to use TVersity, of course. And it's not necssarily your settings which may be giving you problems. It may just be your pc. Transcoding can suck up a lot of resources. So if you have even a slightly older pc, you may have loading or buffering issues.
The best playback without transcoding through TVersity was .mp4 format. But then, you're just stuck with 2 channel audio.
I messed around A LOT with trying to get the most out of using the 360 as a media extender and got feed up and bought a Popcorn Hour.
If you're serious about your movie collection, get fed up with the 360 problems, and don't want to invest in building/buying a HTPC, the PH is by far the best investment you can make.
