just got my wii back today modded with d2pro
i tried to insert a backup disc of sports island it then says i need to perform a system update to play

shall i do this??

To summarize from the HUNDREDS of other threads where people ask about updaing from backups:

If the game is from the same region as your wii, then you can update. If it is from a different region then updating will give you duplicate news and weather channels at the best case scenario, and brick the wii at the worst case.
