Xbox 360 name change, redesign coming?

article published on 19 September, 2008

According to a report over at Hexus, Microsoft's proposed major hardware redesign could also include a new name for the console. Citing the same source that leaked evidence of the Xbox 360 Elite model in advance, a new leaked memo shows that the Xbox 360 revision could be called The Pure. The memo also shows that the revision so far has codenames "Lean" and "Granite" most likely alluding ... [ read the full article ]

I think this is more in line for the NEW xbox 720 in allegedly 2012.
If they do come out with a PURE that would be a slap in the face to us who bought one already.
Chances are if thats is so its 45nm both chips & a slimmer quiter
BR-DVD drive and possibly HARD -ERRR to mod.
POssible however unlikely.

One of their reasons most probably for such a drastic revision is indeed to prevent playing backups and homebrew. Now they will do even more with the firmware of the drive and any other currently working modifications.

The other is to add BluRay support, since HDDVD died. It makes no sense to ever produce a HD-DVD version of the Xbox 360 like was planned. However, they cannot allow game developers to make BR disc games because of the number of people who own Xbox 360 already, even if they sold a separate USB version drive (which would be expensive).

This is what happens when you don't plan ahead and come out way too early with a new console. I sold my pro last year to buy the elite, am I and millions of other 360 owners now going to have to buy everything all over again? If they do then they better offer some sort of trade-in program if there is a new disc format for the games, because there will be A LOT of unhappy customers if they do.

Have we thought that this maybe leaked by Microsoft themselves soo the roumor mill can start spinning. I think the main thing that Microsoft needs to make sure of is that the new console does not over heat.

i will agree with that MS has almost always leaked tid bits of information, on future projects.

i don't think there will be any major hardware reversions, what better way to slim down the 360 than by making the all in one chipset and removal of the steel square in the case. the 360 could be a hell of a lot slimmer the MB in it is not even as big as a HTPC Mainboard

Way to go MS. Let's confuse the consumer some more! It's not enough to have all of these SKU's, but now let's change the names of our products. For their sake, I hope this is rumor and will be applied to future non-360 consoles, as this would just put the nail in the coffin on them looking like a confused business.

BTW, there's no way they are going to release a BR console that will play BR games. Not going to happen... unless you read the above statement and they wish to shoot themselves in the foot even more.

Signed, a proud "Easy Bake 360" owner.

Its about time and I support this is they get the hardware fixed and boost the over all performance by 50% so it can compete for the next 5 years, also I would not question it if they remove the HDD lock, if the HDD lock is in meh, if no real upgrade takes place whats the point?

I hope they unlock the HDD myself and it would be nice to see console as small as the slim PS2 and the Wii. PS3 and xbox360 are almost big as a cpu tower.

The paper, if it is real, specifically says Xbox 360 name change. No mentioned of a NEW console.

Only a fool would go about and buy a brand new version of something they already have thats still working. Thats like people who act like their DS is broken and needs to be replaced just because there is a slimmer version that adds no new features and their old one still will play every DS.

That consumer is mentally challenged and financially secure, so he often finds himself being drained of money. You can't blame big business though.

Also, no games will ever come on a new format. Think about it from a business perspective (these are businesses)... who will publish a 360 game that 99% of the install base can't play? Who will look at that and think its financially viable?
