Hi All

I have converted avis to mpgs using TMPGEnc before with no problems. This time however although the sound is fine in the avi there is no sound in the mpg. Any ideas anyone?

thanks

No audio codecs installed or AC3 audio in the source file.

Thanks

I don't understand that the sound in the avi is ok though. Can I fix the sound in the mpg or do I need to try to convert it with other software?

Cheers
Shelly

My guess is really that the audio is in AC3 and as far as I understand, TMPGEnc can't handle multichannel audio, so you need to downmix the audio somehow to regular stereo-WAV, probably by using VirtualDub to save WAV and select Full processing mode for audio and select the conversion correctly (44.1kHz, stereo). I'm not sure tho', just my initial thought.

Heh :-) To put it simple:

MPEG-1 video, which is the thing that VCDs have, can only contain video file with _stereo_ or mono audio (read: 2 or 1 audio channels) and can't have AC3 audio. AC3 audio is a 5.1 surround audio, meaning that it contains 6 audio channels.

And my guess is that your AVI contains AC3 audio track inside it and therefor TMPGEnc can't handle it. So, you need to "downmix" this 5.1 audio to stereo audio -- it basically means that some program combines 6 audio tracks into 2 audio tracks and saves that thing in WAV format and then you can load the original AVI to TMPGEnc as your video source and the saved downmixed WAV as your audio source.

Ok, to specify the solution (had to try it :) -- open the AVI with VirtualDub and save WAV. Then use Azid (download it and look at the guides at http://doom9.net/ ) to downmix the audio and save the downmixed WAV and use that as your audio source for TMPGEnc.

Thank you

Do you know if there is somewhere else to the Azid GUI from as the link doesn't seem to work and I can't use Azid without it.

Cheers

If you opened the AVI with VirtualDub and saved the WAV, it should be in AC3 format and that is the file that you should open. If you insist (or the program does), you can rename the .wav into .AC3 before you convert it with Azid.

hi, I have run my audio through VirtualDub and I can now hear the sound. The problem that I am running into is that the sound is no longer in perfect sync with the video. Is there a way to correct this problem?

drd, thanks for the help. I tried what worked for shelly and used the file saved as .wav from virtual dub for tmpgenc, but that didn't work. One thing about virtual dub. When i loaded the movie into virtual dub, a message came up that said "Virtual dub has detected an improper VBR audio encoding in the source AVI file and will rewrite the audio header with standard CBR values during processing for better compatibility. This may introduce up to 59633 ms of skew from the video stream. If this is unacceptable, decompress the *entire* audio stream to an uncompressed WAV file and recompress with a constant bitrate encoder. (bitrate : 139.8 +/- 33.2 kbps)" What is this really talking about and saying? What does it mean? And now i have one more question about azid. I went to the site and successfully downloaded it. But when i ran the exe file, a DOS prompt comes up for a split second, and then leaves, and the program never opens. I tried it several times, all but the same happened.
Help would be greatly appreciated.
-jarhead862

P.S. - do all divx SCREENER rips have AC3 audio formats? my guess is yes considering movie theaters have surround sound, but am i wrong?

I added a guide for converting AC3 audio to WAV in order to convert DivX files to SVCD/VCD yesterday -- you can find it from VCD/SVCD forum.

And Azid is a commandline tool, so doubleclicking wont do any good, you need to open the command prompt in order to use it.

Suggest you try out software like Headac3he. It provides a GUI for converting AC3 to Wav, using Azid. I'm not sure if it can be found at this site, but I'm sure it can be found at doom9.
