EA threatens forum users with ban for DRM talk

article published on 24 September, 2008

Electronics Arts has threatened users on its official forum boards with a ban if they continue to talk about the crippling SecuROM DRM that has been as much of a headline this month as the release of the hit game Spore. Although it appears now that the company has backtracked on their threats, the fact that it occurred at all is alarming. The SecuROM DRM used on Spore limits a buyer ... [ read the full article ]

free speech doesn't exist to EA, let's hope that their class action shoves their greedy faces right back in the mud.

Reminds me of the Chuck Norris film "Missing in Action" where the camp prisoners would piss off their Vietcong masters when they talked, to which they received a beating with "NO TALKING!!" orders.

sony just make and peddle SecuROM malware they do not moderate the EA forums.

seems SecuROM does not have it's own EULA it's EA's responsibility for fixes, like making sure that it fully uninstalls when the said EA software is removed, but this is not the case, SecuROM stays on your pc reporting home.

Now thats how they infect everyone's PC with their malware and change the business of software licence sales to a rent structure without the populose finding out just how anti-consumer these courporate pigs are.

so EA are a fire believer in freedom of speech then?

Bad press = loss of sales this is just damage control.

This "silence, don't talk bad about us" approach will continue in many different ways by many different companies because of the internet. With people able to reach out and discuss how they have experienced something so easy and non-restrictive, and share with others so quickly, companies who make bad decisions with their product no longer have a chance to "make money until more word of mouth is spread" and now their product may falter quicker because of the new "word of mouth (internet)". By that I mean someone can now research much quicker now of a product they want to buy, and if after just a few days of product release people are posting "negative" reviews, that means that company now will see an immediate money loss instead of let's say a year the old fashion "word of mouth" way. I see many companies allowing user postings on their websites for product reviews, but to be honest does anyone really think they will allow and keep up damaging reviews of their product they wish you to buy?

This reminds of me some of the issues with Steam. If there are any issues with your account, you can get banned, meaning you cannot play any of the games you've previously purchased and installed on your machine. No refunds. This makes me question whether DRM is even legal, or used/enforced legally. It's certainly not good business practice.

Imagine if you had to ask your car dealer permission to start your car in the morning, a car that is already paid for.

Not to worry, very soon as word gets out, EA will be back peddling from all the bad press and doing damage control with spin.

Banning people ey? C'mon EA, any publicity is good publicity right? I mean people are talking about your product right? Your P.O.S. product which you stuffed full of DRM. I mean isn't this what you wanted? It would be funny if "SPORE" somehow caused the extinction of EA, since more nimble companies that actually understand what consumers want seem more fit for survival in the marketplace. Yes...EA can go stuff itself.

You know ubisoft did exactly this on their forums, with it's choice of, just as invasive Starforce DRM, then it hit the bloggersphere and guess what!

Ubisoft officially dumps Starforce - News at GameSpot

The bad news was, that they just started to use, ScrewUrom, which is on a par with Starforce, poorly written code with 0 support.

the only support you can get is from a nice unhelpful PR moron that says:

hit your windows button + R, type "msconfig", go to the start-up tab and un-tick all, restart and it should work. (obviously you have just turned off your firewall, antivirus, anti malware ect), or its the "other drivers conflicting with our software uninstall everything but the game"

the Starfarce mods even posted a link to illegal torrents on their forums: http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&cli...F-8&sa=N&tab=iw

you want to talk DRM get the 13th or soul commander here, right now they are helping out at the reclaim your game forums: http://reclaimyourgame.com/

Global Class Action Law Suit Launched Against EA
Quote:
This is the best news I've heard in a very long time!

EA is being sued through the Federal Courts, for the undisclosed installation of SecuRom onto the PC's of purchasers of the game Spore.
You can read it for yourself "Courthouse News"
Who knows what the outcome will be, but it should be good news in the long run.

Now EA might learn to listen to their paying Customers.

Are their ANY Canadians Here?

In Canada isn't it illegal to secretly send private information from the end users PC back to the data gathers, via secret phone home software?

As this is what Sony's SecuROM does, it actually portions off part of your memory to enable this task.

I remember reading about Sony's other infamous DRM their RootKit, and that it violated Canada's privacy law because of the data mining of ppl's computers then reporting it all back to Sony?

Sony sued for spyware and rootkits in Canada
Quote:
All of these cases arise from the rootkit issue. The briefs make for interesting reading as the Canadian cases raise a long list of legal issues including the violation of Canadian privacy law, breach of contract, violation of the Competition Act, and a host of tort claims.

And if you read the headline ppl its not just a ban of the forums that EA has threatened.

"Please do not continue to post theses thread or you account may be at risk of banning which in some cases would mean you would need to buy a new copy to play Spore."

This is hilarious. This is exactly what is happening in all our schools, community clubs and neighborhood organizations. A FREAK decides to lay down the law because while he/she/it likes freedom of speech when it's his/her views being expressed, he/she/it doesn't like freedom of speech when it opposes his/her/its views.

Then sometimes, not always, a calmer more rational voice comes along and in essence tells us that ACTUALLY the freak doesn't speak for all of us, although that certainly appeared to be the case.

I hope they give the boot to this freak, and the forum can continue to allow people to speak their minds. He/she/it can find lots of other places to allow them to hunt down the millions of normal people who think something is wrong and want to express it.

Very true... now I'm off to look under the bed for "icremental liberals" who must be screwing with my sleep patterns. ;)

Seems very much that EA (and others) don't like it when their customers actually give them real feedback on products.

What can we do about it?.. perhaps leaving the products on the shelf is too reactionary in this brainwashed and controlled millennium? Whatever you don't you dare think for yourself... that's restricted.

All this hype over this is really good. Now people who didn't really care before are being exposed to the downside of DRM and can make an educated decision over which games to purchase. I see a drop in pre-orders of games. People may just wait until the DRM for a game is released over the internet.
