newbie DVD data compression question (DVD Shrink)

Ok, I got my first DVD+/-RW drive this week, and used Nero 6 and DVD Shrink to backup my first DVD ever (Bruce Almighty).

I noticed there was about 66% compression ratio, when I hit "BACKUP" and away it went. Everything went fine and the movie copied.

I was AMAZED that I could not tell the difference between my original and the DVD copy I made.

1. How does compression work?

2. Can you start to see a difference different compression ratios? Where does quality start to fall? Where do most find it acceptable?

I have burned several discs with DVD Shrink and not 1 coaster. The product is great. I'm sure there are products out there with better compression but I can't tell the difference. Usually you should not compress any disks that are more than 7 gigs or so because you will definitely start to notice a difference in quality.
