I noticed for a while that on my system, on my 'xbox live' dashboard, that there is no news of any sort (that open spot to the left). I go to my friend's house and he has a picture of news. Why is this? Is it my TV?

wow... I hope this is a troll... I'll bite regardless,

It's because your friend is signed in to live. It is clearly the difference. Once signed into live, you will start to get the ads (that's really what it is, not news"). So sign into live and you will get it.
