So I have this problem with my Wii reading back-ups. I have a launch day US D2A console. With the install of my first Wiikey with FW 1.9s I had some trouble reading discs. I would have to eject and re-insert a disc 2 or 3 times for the Wii to read the disc. I thought this may have been the shite solder job I did -it was my first- so I tried to re-solder and buggered it. I ordered a Wiikey pre-soldered to the Wii-clip. Since install I have games that are recognized at first insert, like SMG, Mariokart, SSBB, RE4, then I have games that always need to be inserted 2x Sonic/Rings, or 3x SW TFU. This is consistent. Recently none of newly burned back-ups work, the Wii won't recognize them at all. Meanwhile all of the previous back-ups still work as before. This is the case even if I burn a previously working rip. I have an LG 8162b, all of my back-ups are from originals so no trucha signing. All rips are at the precise size. I am burning with a Samsung drive with imgburn and Verbatim DVD-R @ 4x. Things I have tried:

Wiikey recovery 1.9b->FW update 1.9s
Wii fw downgrade to 3.2U
Wii fw update to 3.3U
Multiple burn attempts with unrecognized game

I have about 10 coasters sitting there. I don't think it's the Wiikey, as I am still able to use my old back-ups. I don't think it's the media-10 bad discs in a row? Could it be my burner? Or even my Wii? I have another Wii with the D2E chip. I am waiting for a D2Pro 9 V3. Then I can check the coasters on that to see if they really don't work. Anyone have any other ideas to help trouble shoot? Thanks. ---Chikn

Could be the burner. I had a burner starting to go on me awhile back and was getting bad burns. I only tried to burn 1 wii game during that time and it worked, but roughly half the disks I burned then did not work.

Question???

Do you have a external fan connected to your wii.

I have found that certain fans created by madcatz and datel for the nintendo wii pull a load on the console giving you a disk cannot be read error message this is do to the drive not getting enough power..

I would also try if you don't have a external fan a real game and see if it run's it could be the games you are trying to burn could just be a faulty iso or the iso needs patched.

Thanks for the replies. I don't have anything connected to the Wii that was not stock, except the Wiikey of course. I have tried to burn new iso's and also .iso files that I have ripped previously that are still stored on my computer. All rips are region (U). If I re-burn a game that consistently plays, such as Mariokart Wii, the new burn does not play. The old burn still works. Real discs work fine. Weird.

I just scanned a few of the discs that would not play with DVDInfoPro. All 98-99% quality with 10 or fewer PI errors avg, and 0-2 PI failures avg. that = good burns. WTF??? Anyone have any ideas? Could it be the Wii?? If so why would it read originals and only some back-ups? Crap!!! ---Chikn

Good thought about the Gecko OS. I tried it and I get No DVD error. All of my Back-ups are from original discs, I haven't had to scrub/unscrub them for storage or otherwise. One of the loaded discs did freaze up the Wii so I had to unplug it to restart. I got a bunch of codes on the screen when it froze:

GPR01 814BB5F8...a bunch of other codes up to ...GPR31...

then there was a section CODE DUMP: 8131238....

Ah memory dump error.

This happens when the disk fails to burn something on the disk.

So now i think your burner may be the problem.

Well today I burned copies of the disc that just would not work, star wars tfu. I had about 5-6 copies with the first drive, different speeds, nero and imgbrn. then I burned with my other computer, different drive model. I got different error messages but still no dice. I went out and bought a hitachi writer (I have one on order from newegg but I just couldn't wait). IT FINALLY WORKED!!!!! I burned SW-TFU and it loaded on the first insert. It's awfully funny how low the tolerance is of the Wii dvd drive. I have only burned 2 of the problem games so far but they both load flawlessly, whereas before they were not even recognized. I believe that the problem is the DVD writer. Incidentally both drives that wrote unreadable discs are Samsung drives, different models, both with up to date firmware. Wii no likey Samsung. Thanks for the help people. ---Chikn

Soooo...I just got my D2Pro9 for a brand new D2E with metal clip Wii. This model/combo reads ALL of the previously unreadable and trouble discs the other Wii - a D2A with WiiKey console - would not read. This is despite 2 WiiKeys on the original console. But the D2A console would read discs burned with a hitachi drive but not a Samsung drive. Are new Wii model more tolerant of different media? Or is it just that I got 2 buggered WiiKeys?

I think the newer Wii's are more tolerable. This was the whole reason they are allowing people to ship Wii's to Nintendo for a free clean when they stop reading discs.

In my case it started happening little by little and now I'm to the point where only real crappy games like Wii Sports and Wii Play will work. I got so disgusted that I decided to just trade the system in at Gamestop, but now not even brand new licensed games are reading in the drive. Last week I pulled it apart to adjust the laser pot down to 485 from where it was at 815 (by the way, how do others get their OHM Meters in there? We had a HELL of a time).

I've ordered a new laser. I'll install it and once it's up and going I'm getting rid of this thing.

I had a similar problem and found after cleaning the burner my burns are back and can play fine. I burned maybe 200+ DVDs and read countless hundreds in the drive and it is ~4 years old so not surprising it needed a cleaning.

Brings up the question (OT) what are the good DVD drive cleaner kits?

Thanks
