I'm looking for a media server that can support hd playback. Can anyone point me to the right direction? I've heard good things about wmp11 and TVersity, but i just don't know enough about it to decide...

I am also trying to learn about media servers. What do they do? How do they work? What good ones to use? Can any one advise on this? Thanks :)

I use Windos Media Player 11 (WMP11) because it is free. Most have a lower virsion that comes with your PC but up grading is free. I have not tried streaming HD cause I dont have any on my PC. Should work. I hear TVersity is good also. A Media Server = Your PC set up to allow Music, Videos, Pictures, Files etc to be accessed by other equiptment on your network. In WMP11, you define which of these things can be accessed and by what device on your network.

I have spent HOURS on end trying to configure a problem free media server. I have used both WMP11 and Tversity. The nice thing about TVersity is that it can encode videos "on-the-fly" so that your PS3 can recignize and then play the video. WMP11 doesnt encode and i dont think you can customize the menu folders that you see on you ps3 XMB. but IMO there are bugs with both. I havent got Tversity to work with vista 64 bit even after setting up a user account like every tutorial tells me to do so. also i havent had luck with my ps3 being able to recgignize me HD formats with MP11 although i think that is my PC's issue at this point. but I have had some sucesss with windows XP sp2 and tversity streaming wirelessly to my ps3 with avi divx and other formats. so just try MP11 if you know you have the right format.

PS3 REALLY REALLY needs to support mkv files...

Why not just use mkv2vob? It takes like 10 minutes to mux and then you can burn the (data) movie to a disk. From there you can store it on the PS3's hard drive. It is very simple. Put a new hard drive in the PS3 and you're golden. If you have standard Def movies you could put hundred's on the hard drive. I have aprox 50 HD movies stored directly on my PS3. I don't ever even use it for gaming.

As MKV is just a container, it all depends on the actual video an audio streams within said container that the PS3 reads, if they are not compatiable it wont play.

i am still fighting with this streaming thing. i have gotten ride of tversity and i have begun the process of using MP11 with vista 64 bit. after googling and finding something on wikianswers i solved an issuse i had that stated mediaserver couldnt start because of settings or firewall settings. but thats another issue in itself. my problem now is i can view all my files i have in a folder that i shared on my network with my ps3. i have .mkv format and ran that through tsmuxer to make an m2ts file. i have tried to stream that, i have also turned on the file extension under options in the windows folder and taken the m2ts file and made it and mpeg. ps3 can see both the m2ts and mpeg (mpeg comes up in ps3 as mpeg 2) but when i try to play them i just get a black screen on the tv like it is just starting up. and after about a min i see the little bar at the bottm that has the play arrow and the option to press the ps button but after i continue to wait i still dont get anything. i tried to rename the file .mp4 and that shows up as mpeg 4 and still, the same thing. the only other thing i can think of is to try the .mts i read about somewhere in the Afterdawn forums. i know its not the file because it plays fine after i converted it on my pc under the m2ts and mpeg file exention.

any ideas?

ok an update to my last post. I found that when i wired my ps3 to laptop wmp11 played my m2ts files fine without any slowing down jerking or shudders. it was weird like the whole ps3 would freeze for a few seconds and i actually heard sound for one of my files and saw the video and sound sound for a smaller file. but with wired it works better. seems that my network isnt fast enough to stream large files. its 802.11g maybe i shoulda got 802.11n instead...

bummer then. a question about the vob converter mentioned earlier. can that do more than tsmuxer? by more i mean, if you have an mkv with dts audio you have to use other programs to split the audio video streams and then mux them together. can the vob program do audio conversion and video conversion?

I use agreat app to encode my movies to m2ts, its called MeGui, it can also encode audio.
Upon installing, it gives you various profiles for what you want it to do, it also updates itself.
A very good app.
