Hi i did the xclamp fix a while ago, been having a few issues with the fans going mental and now it freezes after about 30 secs, i only put a tiny bit of paste on the chips, almost see through in fact, could it be that i didnt put enough paste on chips. I am thinking there is no contact to heatsink through the paste so no heat is being drawn from the chip, am i correct in thinking this, please help i am gutted, my box isnt getting rrod anymore it just freezes!

Yes i would think that a layer of paste that thin to the point of being see through would give any cpu a problem wether it be in a game system or a PC. I work on servers and pc and shit all day and i can tell you that a layer of paste that thin would be almost like not having any at all. I suggest you take it back apart and apply more. Do not apply so much that it overflows from the chip. u dont want it on the circuits or the socket or anything cause that could damage the whole board. Put about a 2-3mm THICK not wide dot on the center of the chip and u can either place the heatsink back on and apply some pressure to spread the paste and then u can lift it to check to see if u got good coverage. in this method it is best to apply too little rather than too much to avoid overage. or u can apply a small amount and spread it with a Clean credit card or something similar but not paper. If u are lucky your chip isnt already damaged but it could be so dont be surprised if it never works the same again. GPU is the same basically if it gets too hot it can fry the chip and u get screwed up gfx forever. you will get varying opinions on how to apply paste but the main thing is to just be carefull and patient

Hi, i re did the xclamp fix, put about 3 grains of rice worth of paste on the 2 big chips and 1 on the little chip, evened it out with a credit card and tightenend screws as much as i could, then overheated for 20 mins, all seemed great for about 15mins and then it froze again, GUTTED. Really fed up with it now. going to try my old fan back in it as i spliced my new one as i have blown an output on one side of my fan plug, DONT ASK, Just thinking maybe this could also be a cause of it over heating, what you think?

Well either it isnt getting enough airflow, or something else is going on. also if u tighten the screws too hard it can put too much pressure on the chips. When tightening screws on CPU/heatsinks and the such only enough pressure needed to keep it firmly in plac eand not loose. I usually tighten mine with one hand till till i cant tighten them anymore unless i really try to force it. so tighten it untill it is firm and then just give it a little bit more but not too much. u shouldnt have to crank on it with both hands.
that may not be the problem at all though, i am just throwing it out there incase.
maybe the solder didnt get reflowed well enough when u did the overheat. Try looking up the heatgun method on here i have heard people talk about that but i have never had to use it.

Hey, i have had a bit of a break through with my box, i decided to try my stock fan back in instead of my whisper which i had spliced the wires together, and got an hour out of it without any problems, Looks like maybe with me splicing the wires it was trying to suck to much power from somewhere, which was causing it to overheat a hell of alot faster, anyway only one fan works, as i said one side of my fan socket has blown and i dont know how to fix this so am planning on getting a whisper fan max and plugging it into the dvd drive, so hopefully this will be a longer fix!
