unplayable disc error

I am getting the unplayable disc error for every disc I try to play in my 360. I have an unmodded 360 with a hitachi GDR 3120L disc drive. My question is can If I buy a new drive will it just work as soon as I plug it in and install it. Also, if I choose to just replace the laser is there any good guides around that I could reference, (preferably with a video). By the way the magnet seems to be fine on my drive and I already tried oiling the motor's spindle, so i'm guessing I probably need a new laser.

Ok so I found out from another forum that I have to flash the drive if I replace it, but I read somewhere that if I get the same exact drive with the same exact firmware, and switch the motherboard it will work without having to flash it. My new question is to anyone who has had this problem and fixed it, would you guys reccomend replacing the drive or just the laser? Any links to any guides would be greatly appreciated.

Just my opinion on this one but...

I would buy the new drive and swap out the boards. Then I would resell the used drive and swapped out board, full disclosure of course, and recoup some of the cost.

Why?
Well swapping the laser is more work depending on your skill level than swapping out the board. Also if you buy just the laser and it doesn't fix the problem then you probably would wish you had bought a completely new drive from the start.

Again that's me and someone might have a better suggestion than mine.
