Great help! Great timing! Thank you very much McCrash!

It worked smoothly at the first try! It was so nice to read the message <restriction off> on the screen!

I was really happy...but here is what happened next: I have purchased a new SIM card (namely Orange) with a local phone number and Pay As You GO service (I have started my European trip)

I have inserted the new SIM card and I expected to be promted with the greeting of the new carrier (Orange). This has not happened though!

The phone accepted the card with no problem. I changed the setting from Phone to SIM card with no issue. I was able to insert Contacts but...I am not able to make or receive calls.

I am struggling to understand why the Rogers Carrier is still the default one when I switch the phone on. I have realized that under Settings the default carrier is Rogers but the option to Delete it is grayed out and because of this a switch to other carriers is not possible.

I tried a few things with another Nokia from a friend. I have inserted the Orange SIM card and when the phone was switched on it showed the Orange greeting right away. My friend's phone uses a Vodafone SIM and I was able to see both carriers options under Settings; thus it was easy to switch from default to new carrier.

I expected to see both carriers under my phone Settings as well and to switch from Rogers to Orange and use it with no issues.

Since this did not happened I tried to Reset the Factory Settings to get rid of the grayed out option of Delete. It did not work.

I took the SIM card off and inserted it again hoping that the Orange greeting will show up but at no avail. Still Rogers carrier is shown.

This led me to believe that maybe there is another software lock that Rogers applied to the phone to make it an exclusive carrier default.

I do not want to abuse your kindness but I would appreciate your commens/advise/solution on this.

Thank you once again!

What country are you currently in and trying to use the Orange network ?

With regards to making calls: Please remember that the Canadian Nokia 6101 is only a Tri-band model that only works on these frequencies GSM 850/1800/1900mhz. Europe uses GSM 900/1800/2100mhz, so if you are unable to make/receive calls you are in an area that is supporting either 900/2100mhz frequency. When you are in an area that supports your phones frequency Orange will be selected as your network of choice - Select Automaticin your phones Network settings.

To check frequency compatibility, look here

Now for the second part, deleting/removing Rogers network/settings etc...: The only way to fully remove Rogers from your phone is to flash the phone with debranded software, unfortunately this will cost unless you know someone with the required hardware...

Thank you for your comments SpencerFW!

I am currently visiting Eastern Europe and have started in Bucharest, Romania.

You are correct about the frequencies the North-American model of Nokia 6101 operates: GSM 850/1800/1900 MHz. I have known this and therefore I have purchased a SIM card from a carrier which was operating in GSM 900/1800 MHz.

Romania has three major carriers:
Orange Romania - GSM 900/1800/3G 2100 MHz
Vodafone Romania - GSM 900/3G 2100 MHz
Cosmote Romania - GSM 900/1800 MHz

Since Vodafone was out of question I have chosen Orange over Cosmote. The reason was that once I have switched my phone on in Bucharest I was greeted by a Cosmote message. I could have used the phone at its full capabilities without changing SIM card, BUT...all calls were suppposed to be routed through Canada via Rogers Network which I obviously did not want. Actually on the screen I had the Cosmote/Rogers names together like a partnership. And mind you, I have not asked for any roaming from Rogers before I have left.

The fact that Cosmote was right away picked by the phone showed that I was in a GSM 1800 MHz covered area.

So, I have chosen Orange which was supposed to also operate with GSM 1800 MHz over an even greater area than Cosmote. And I bought the SIM card to get a local number and keep the calls on a local level.

The association of names on the screen Cosmote/Rogers was indeed unexpected since I was not aware of any partneship. However I have even got a message from Rogers telling that I can access my Voice Messages in the same manner like home (Canada). And all this has happened just by simply switching the phone on the first time over here.
