How can a person tell if the file is a "iso" or "cso"?
My friend downloaded this game for his PSP and the file is labeled "psy-swftu". Is this safe to install on his PAP (usa version with 3.71 cfw installed)?

It is safe. You can tell by the name.
psy-swftu.iso or psy-swftu.cso
If you cant find the extension, then you disabled it. To enable it, go to any folder. Click Tools and Folder Options. Click on the View Tab. uncheck "Hide extensions for known file types"

Whether its cso or iso, my friends had the same prob, apparently you will need to upgrade to at least 3.90.
My friend had 3.52 and could not run it and after i told him to upgrade it worked fine. Mine works fine also, but i am on 4.01.
So if you upgrade, your best bet is 4.01. I have not had any problems with 4.01 so far and i have been using it for about 2 months now.
PS - Don't mind my old sig either, been a while since i been on these boards :)

That did it, it is now a "iso" file. Weird, I dont recall ever changing it and other seeing it that way, but who cares. I wil lwt him know to change his CFW up to 4.01.
Thanks.

If you want to decrease the size of it seeing as how some games in .iso format are over a gig just run it through UMDGEn to get rid of the useless files and then compres it to .cso format. I took my force unleashed game from 1.1gig to 600mb.

Why not?

That's what I do. I remove other languages and the UPDATE file using UMDGen and then compress to .CSO using Yacc.
By removing the UPDATE file you'll be able to play new games on any CFW.
