hi, just emailed sony for improvement.
good day sir/maa'm, My name is Derek, I am one of the thousands complaining about the psp volume level. I / we tested our psp's with different hi-fi system so we can also listen music at our offices and homes but we are very disappointed with the volume level it is very low even we turn off the avl feature but amazingly with ipod mp3 player it is very loud speacialy with big hi-fi component system. We are here to ask if you "SONY" can improve this feature with your next firmware update please. If you visit one of the furom site like afterdawn.com maxconsole , qj.net you will see how badly need this feature since we dont only use our psp to play games we use it also to play mp3 music with our hi-fi system. We hope you hear us. Looking forward to hear from you soon! Thank you very much and more power! from, psp users all over the world

but i just did a test with my Ipod Nano 2nd gen my psp fat 3.90m33 and my archos 704
i found that when the ipods eq is on bass booster and the psp eq is on pop the ipod is louder but when i turn both eq's off i find that the ipod is about the same if not a little bit quieter.
the archos though a big powerful device is even quieter then the ipod and psp with all eq of and bass booster off as well and even when i turn it all on to my settings i find that its still i bit quieter than the ipod and psp
so id recoment mixing the eq's about and then seeing the effect and if you have to put the psp in a treble booster eq just pump up the bass eq on the hifi
the main problem that you would get if you boost the sound is that it will become distorted and not have as nice sound quality sony have set it so that its loud but not so loud that they will distort
but you never know they may put it on a new fw as 5.0 is planning on being released
