Hi
I am building a new pc and i want to put in a blueray drive. What gfx card is best for getting maximum high definition picture quality?

Now Ive got alot of ppl on one hand telling me that a cheaper gfx card will do while Ive read articles that send me in the opposite direction.

Quote:
And then there are those people looking for some form of home entertainment computer. The trick here is to pick a card that will keep the load away from the computer's core processing power. TV playback, for instance, has modest requirements (although naturally you'll be looking for a graphics card that can take an input from your aerial or satellite box, for instance), while processing the likes of forthcoming HDTV images needs more power. Even so, we're still talking an expenditure topping out at around the £100 mark.
Now im not a pc gamer so the gaming aspect is irrelevant. However i do love my movies and am looking to build a pc that can handle any high definition movie etc. I will be building my pc around a quadcore intel q6600.

Any advice and suggestions will be greatfuilly recieved

An HD4650 will get the job done and they are far from £100. I know this because they are significantly faster than my old X1900, and that can play all sorts of high def absolutely fine.

what about this gfx card?
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/140433

It seems to be geared more towards hdtv than gaming. Or should i go back towards the HD4650. Also the above gfx card is only 256mb would that be detrimental as everything seems to be 512 nowadays?

The HD3650 is MUCH worse than the 4650, possibly as low as half the performance. Memory hasn't got much to do with it, unless you play games at 1680x1050 or above, 256MB is ample for any card.

the card will come with a vga dongle.

but if you are looking for the best picture quality, you should be using dvi already.

Agreed, VGA destroys any advantage of having a decent graphics card, you need to use DVI, or DVI-HDMI for a HDTV.

hi

Ive looked for the hd4650 with no avail and the hd 4670 it a little over my price range. If anyone is familiar with ebuyer could someone recommend a decent card on that site.

The HD4650 isn't available in the UK yet unfortunately. The HD4670 is only £64 and is a thoroughly good buy, but if you do nothing but play high def, the HD3650 will be fine.

IMOt he 4 series are much better for playing hi def, over the 3 series, due to 7.1 surround sound ture DTS HD audio decoding over HDMI through the 4 series. if i were you i would get the 4670, so incase you ever feel like gaming it will be perfect :)
