I need some help please. I've been looking all over the internet, and can't get a straight answer on if this is repairable or not.
My 80gb ps3 won't take discs. Not won't read, won't take, as in the ps3 won't pull in the disc.
My 3 yo son shoved some coins in the drive (ouch) and jammed it. One got stuck, so I had to take it apart to pull it out. Since coins in the drive obviously voided the warranty, I figured it didn't matter much if I took it apart or not. So I opened it up and got out the coins, to discover the new problem.
Is it possible to swap a new blu ray drive? Perhaps by purchasing another broken console with something else wrong and combining them? I don't have money to throw away, so I can't afford just to buy one to test it out. Does anyone know of a for-sure way that I could fix it cheaper than sending it back to sony?
You can most definitely buy a new drive for it. I'm just not sure how much that'd cost you. Or, like you said, you could buy another PS3 with something like a faulty motherboard and use it as an organ donor.
I'm not sure how much a new drive would cost, though that'd be your best bet. (Usually, when people sell their broken PS3s, they won't know what's wrong with it, so you could be buying something that's got the exact same problem as yours.)

before you do anything read the bluray drive dead forum. i remeber there being cases where after to 2.42 firmware update that sony fixed even after warrenty was out. but i had a 60 that failed, tried a laser before we found out that there were faulty ones in circ. i gave up and paid 150 to sony even after i told them i broke a connector for the ribbon on the media card reader. they said worst case it would be sent back and no charge. 2 weeks later i had a refurbished ps3 60 gig. i for got my serial number so i cant say if it was mine or not, will i could find it but i am lazy and dont care because it works. but in that thread someone ordered a broken ps3 and swapped the drive. skim through last pages... i think that they concluded the drive was keyed to the motherboard. but i couldnt find the exact post. but skim through it.
