article published on 3 October, 2008

Favreau made the announcement during an interview with 'shock jock' Howard Stern on Stern's radio show on Sirius XM. The new fact is not ... [ read the full article ]

What? no one is ranting about piracy today???

with jokes aside, I liked both this movie and DK, let's see how the numbers pit against each other, although it's common sense to think DK will surpass Ironman's sales...

On the sarcasm stakes.. as you obviously haven't had enough yet... how many is "the most"...

20,000 ... 10,000... 1,000... 5 ???

Probably about 1% of the dvd sales figures... but they wouldn't want us to know that would they?

Oh they do let you know.

The Nielsen numbers for this week will come out next Friday.

The previous week's numbers were reported yesterday. BluRay's revenue was up 23.22% to $10.92 Million or 9.18% of total. You can expect a bigger jump for this week.

I personally wouldn't trust the numbers given out by studios. (Remember the Transformers discrepancy last year where the numbers included those shipped to rental outlets?)

I'd rather wait for the Nielsen/HMM percentages and Kosty's calculations based on those and the reports on thenumbers.com.

Added: Bill Hunt of thedigitalbits.com is reporting that LOTR is coming out on BD in 2009:

What's more, our industry sources tell us that ALL THREE Lord of the Rings films are planned for release in Blu in 2009, though we're not yet certain if the discs will be the theatrical editions, the extended editions or both. Still, if that isn't enough reason for some of you holdouts to run out and pick up a player this holiday season, I don't know what is

The claims are surely based only on wholesale figures, not sell through to the public. Too early for that!

Paramount could give us a fairly accurate estimate based on the number of unique BD-Live interactions recorded on their server. They won't be able to count those without 2.0 profile players but the number of unique IP addresses that connected with their servers could give a fairly good estimate of units sold.

Oh shut up already would ya? You and your anti-sony anti-bd speeches and rants are old, varull. In fact, I wonder if you have a random comment posting bot that trolls any site posting sony information.

I do not see how it is selling so well. It wasn't that good. I'll stick with my SD version and my trusty backup copy. Thank you anyway BD.
I'd like to see how the Dark Knight stacks up, or surpasses this when it debuts on Blu Ray.

BluRay revenue rose 145.56% to $26.84 million for the week.
Iron Man sold 17.14% on BluRay.

@juankerr:

Here's more concrete figures from thenumbers.com:

http://www.the-numbers.com/interactive/newsStory.php?newsID=3757

Iron Man BluRay:

Total 1st week unit sales: 879,000
Total 1st week revenue: $23.07 million

Quote:
On a side note, some reports have Iron Man DVD selling 7.2 million units during its first week, however, this likely includes copies sent to rental chains, as well as those sold at retailers.

Moving onto Blu-ray, several records were broken this week, including for individual titles as well as the format as a whole. Sales flew to their highest recorded levels climbing 146% from last week hitting $26.8 million. That's 15.7% of the total home market sales revenue, and 13% of the top 20 comparison (and all three of the sales numbers are records). Like last week, this means the catalog titles are outselling the big releases, at least in terms of Blu-ray to DVD ratio. This is amazing since this week we had the best selling single release in Blu-ray history with Iron Man selling an estimated 879,000 units generating $23.07 million in sales. This is not only the best opening week sales for a Blu-ray release, it the best selling Blu-ray of all-time. In fact, according to an interview with Jon Favreau, it was able to get there in just two days. Wow.
