My Ethernet port on my 360 used to say it was plugged in when it did a live test now it says it doesn't work at all. I use to just have to take it out and plug it back in a couple times , but now it doesn't work at all. I have tested the cord on my PS3 and it works so I know it is not the cord or the router. Its there a way to fix this without buying a wireless adapter? One other detail is that the tab the sticks out of the Ethernet end got broken off ,but like I said it still worked on my PS3 regardless.

i dunno of a way to fix it. unplugging and plugging in this causes wear and tear. you might be able to rig it, but i wouldnt be able to tell you how, i would pm bhetrick as he is pretty good with the details. the only thing i can tell you is that if you do end up needing to get a wirless adapter i saw some pelican wireless adapters in gamestop about a month and a half ago for like 60$ which is almost half of what the offical M$ ones cost. hope this helps.

OK do you think sanding the joints inside the port with some sand paper might make for a better connection?

Got your pm. The first thing I'd do is try another cable. I know you said it works in your PS3, but one possible problem could be from excessive plugging/unplugging. One of the connections in the 360 port can be flattened just enough to not connect. Same goes with the plug on the cable. The connection in your PS3 may still have plenty of arch, enough to hit on the cable.

If you don't have another cable, just unplug that one from the router and turn it around.

Start off with that. More can be done if you still don't have any luck, but you'll have to open the 360.

Another thing I have to ask. You only said the LIVE test said it doesn't work at all. I just want to double check; you're saying the "Wired" test fails, or the "LIVE" test is failing?

good point about turning the cable around. both the console and the wire could be worn in the same spot not causing to connect, whereas on a different cable or in his case (possibly the other end of the cable) might have the exra cenimetter to contact the flattened spot on the console. Learn something new everyday.

Thanks for the advice I might try that because it used to work. One problem though is that is is wired in my basement so I need to take it down and everything oh well I might as well is blue colored cable the best type of Ethernet cord? If not where can I buy some cheap blue cable about 60 feet long I know stores in the malls charge way too much!

That's good to hear. You don't need blue cable. Any cat5 is fine. I know my local Lowes has it on a spool and sells it by the foot. But if you're already wired and it's only the plug which is bad, don't rewire your house, just replace the plug. You can get a box of plugs and a crimping tool a lot cheaper than just buying a new cable. And there are a ton of guides with pictures on line which show the order the wires go in the plug.

Glad you got it working Decodem, like Bhetrick said, just buy the crimping tool and the plugs, its cheaper than the wire, you will learn a new trade, and you get to keep the tool in the end for next time!

Not to butt in or anything, but yea I would have to agree with the crimping tool/ethernet heads idea. I have saved myself a ton of money making my own ethernet cables and it's pretty simple once you get the hang of it.
