stidemon,

I don't wish to get off on the wrong foot but, if you are having the problems that you say, you have no idea in the world how to rip a DVD -

Try DVDShrink -

Here it is with the guide to teach you how :-)

Shrink download - http://forum.digital-digest.com/showthread.php?s=c53155f4dd417b97fb6287581453b338&threadid=32393

My Friend, I'm truly trying to help - if you would have downloaded the "Shrink link" I put in my last post, you would see that it's not necessary to have Nero burn it - Shrink uses Nero without your help so no mistakes can be made -

If you save it and then have Nero burn it, you probably have Shrink 3.0 beta 5 or before - get the new one, it avoids mistakes.

With nothing on your disk, it sounds like you are trying to burn it with Nero Wizard - no way, it has got to be in New Compilation, Classic mode -

Either that or you aren?t properly moving your files over - at the bottom is a step by step guide to go from Shrink folder to completed DVD using Nero -

Step by Step ?
Do not use Nero Wizard.
When you open Nero Burning ROM, you will be at the ?New Compilation? window. Directly under the title ?New Compilation? is a choice block to choose either DVD or CD, choose DVD. Directly under that click on the DVD Video Icon. Then click ?New? in the upper right corner of that screen, NOT the main screen.
You now are in the DVD Video window. In the left screen, click VIDEO_TS. In the File Browser screen, 3rd from the left, trace your path to the VIDEO_TS folder, the one you made in the beginning, holding your work and click on that folder. All of your VIDEO_TS files are now opened in the right screen. Click on the top file, hold down the ?Shift? key and then click the bottom file thereby hi-lighting the entire column of files. Click and (holding the left mouse button down) drag the entire column of files to the open screen, second from the left.
Now click the icon on the task bar that shows a match on a disc, and then click ?OK? and now ? ?Burn you sweet thing, Burn Baby, Burn !? ? ?Let me hear you say it, Who?s your Daddy Now ????

(Wheeew, Now I need a cigarette)

Guess what my Friend ??

Go watch some TV, call your mother (It?s been awhile since she?s heard from you, don?t ya know?) You are done !!!
Keep all fingers and toes away from Ms. Computer. Never mess with the lady when she?s working ? it would be a health thing, you understand -
Go and have your coffee, when Nero is done she will let you know ;-))

Enjoy,
?Pete?

NOTE: When you say you get a message of copyright protection, you aren't using Shrink, Shrink rips the copyright away - and now the new version automatically compresses it and burns it for you :-)

Thanks for your help, i followed the instructions exactly with the new download and it ended saying that the burn was successful and complete. when i tried viewing it there is nothing on it. its burned but empty. so i am still having the same problem as before although this method is better than the old shrink. do you know what could be wrong? thanks for your help.

stideman,

Huuummmm, putting on my thinking cap, -
I know that this is going to sound silly BUT, if the message said "Burn Successful" it should by rights, be there - try rebooting the computer, sometimes it needs a clear head, so-to-speak, before it reads the DVD. So, reboot, then without anything else running, try to play it again.

You might also try to play it on PowerDVD from the file that DVDShrink made for you this last time - under "select source", choose "open DVD file from hard disc drive". Also, let's try running it in a standalone, the regular way first then, try to run it from "root directory".

If you did everything using Shrink, you CAN'T have made a mistake -

The last things to screw up are the media (incompatibility or bad disc) or burner, either it needs a upgrade flash (it's possible, check mfg.'s home page) or uninstall it, then reboot, reinstall it, let the PC find it then reboot.

There's only so much to cover, it's there somewhere -

Let me know how you made out -

You and I are just too good and it?s trying to hide from us, find it and then give it a good scolding -

Pete

can you give us more info?
1. Name and model of burner drive
2. Brand and type blank media(+ or -)
3. What program is telling you burned media is blank
4. What are you trying to play the copy in(PC or Stand alone player)
5. If playing on a PC, what player software are you using

This may help us find your problem.
Hi Pete, looks like another tricky one.

Ok, i tried everything you said and no luck. it still doesnt work. no program opens the disk and my tv dvd says insert disc while it is in there. the additional information is listed below.

-asus dvd + ReWritable
-verbatim discs that are also +
-asus dvd xp wont open it and my sony dvd player also says no disc. i also tried exploring the file but usually it was blank but now it just freezes each time i click to open or explore it that way.

i used the new shrink program and Nero 6. i burned only one movie from blockbuster just to check, but this was one of the crappiest movies called, thrust, but no other dvd worked. so there has been one success but never repeated. thanks guys.

You have crossed the line, we cannot condone PIRACY in any form, and the fact that the movie was "Crappy" does not excuse you from copying something not yours.

This thread cannot be allowed to continue.

Jerry,
Nice to see you, my friend, let's head out to see if we can be of service to someone on the right side of the tracks -

- Good answer -

Understand, there are too many people reading these forums who are waiting for us to promote any illegal activity. - alright, we'll continue -

Ok, let's look at your Burner, How about checking for a current flash update -

1. Let's flash that sucker and see if it will behave -

2. Let's start using RW media so you aren't using up +R discs.

3. Let's check your DVD's compatibility with +R media.

We still need that info of your system - see Jerry?s first question -

Jerry, do you have any ideas ?? Time to brainstorm -

Hi stidemon,

The first thing I would suggest is to download this tool and see if you have some write errors on your disc. Try some different media at any rate, Ritek, Memorex etc, the good stuff! (expensive)

http://www.dvdinfopro.com

Try using DVD Decrypter to decrypt your disc first, you can download it here:

http://www.dvddecrypter.com/download.asp

Use Decrypter in file mode and once it has finished and made a folder on your hard drive, Open Shrink, select open files and then compress and burn.

Before using Shrink, use your media player to watch your movie by browsing for the folder that Decrypter made. Just to make sure there's somthing there.

If you are not getting any error messages then I would suspect a media problem.

As far as recording used movies, just make sure that you look before you buy! I get quite a few of mine the same way, although now that all my friends and relatives know I like DVDs, Thats about all I got for Christmas and my birthday.

Its really important to us here (you, as a member are included,) that we don't allow piracy be promoted here. It is not healthy for Afterdawn.

You have come to the right place for help, and to help us help you, tell us as much as possible about your system, all the DVD programs you have installed, The make and model of your DVD drives and anything else you can think of. What, for example, are the steps you take with Shrink when you use it? Are you following a guide?

I think taking a look at the ripped files with Powerdvd, etc will help narrow things down a bit, no error messages with Nero says something too.

If you use that DVD infopro tool, it will tell you the make and model of your burner and other drives, firmware versions and other useful stuff.

(Nothing wrong with checking ones Device Manager, it would tell the drives' model also-)

Goodness me, Hi ya Frank, you me and Jerry, WOW !

It's time for a BBQ and Beer -

I can't see a problem from Shrink doing the ripping, it cycles through and provides a VIDEO_TS folder, which it couldn't do if it hit a copyright barrier. It has to be a compatible folder otherwise Nero wouldn't burn it successfully.

I'm still thinking a flash upgrade, and yet again, disc compatibility -

Good to see Ya'll, stidemon, this is like the "Three Amigo's",(actually there's four but "Doc" hasn't showed up yet) all riding in to save the day, WaHoo !!

The "Doc" is here...

Asus drives are re-badged drives, some of them are Pioneer inside.

Have a look here to see if your drive is really a Pioneer:
http://pioneerdvd.rpc1.org/

I am the odd-one-out in that I reckon Nero is "Flakey" for DVD-Burning, but that is just me ;)

YeeeeHaawwww!!!

Not true *"Doc" (*fastest fingers in the west), I'm a believer too - had my fill last week - t'wasn't the Petes-ters fault, t'was Nero that acted up.

How-some-much-ever - nothing an uninstall and reinstall couldn't fix - (stupid, silly, flakey Nero)

Back to the business at hand, Ya think *Nero would "seem" to burn, even giving a Successfull Burn notice, and be at fault ??

* stidmon, I need you to keep a close watch on us - if for instance anything I say or, anyone else says, isn't correct - you need to jump in and correct us right away. Also, if we ask you to check something and you don't know how - ask - thats what we're here forv-

I'll tell ya what though, this thread is smokin' - "THE AMAGOS" are in the house ! ! !

and that would be ME A-Sayin' that - (ö¿ô)

ASUS DRW-0402P/D DVD±RW/DVD±R Drive Review

"ASUS optical drives subdivision promptly reacts to the market situation and continuously updates its model row with up-to-date drives. The DRW-0402P/D DVD is one of its latest products; actually, it was designed in collaboration of Pioneer and ASUS and it's one of OEM versions of the DVR-106."

If you can, post the log Nero makes, I'd like to take a look at it.

Flashing your drive is not needed until we can tell if your files created by Shrink are readable.

You need to locate the VIDEO_TS folder that Shrink made with your media player and try to play the movie from those files.
If they won't play then, they sure as heck won't play after you burn them.
The burner and media is the last process that occurs to create a back-up. I want to establish that what is taking place before the burn process is resulting in DVD-Video compliant files!
So far, everything indicates that is where the problem lies, before the burn process.
We've established that your Asus XP media player won't read the disc, now we need to see if your player will read the Shrink folder.
That Nero log file is really helpful, hopefully you can post one.
