I'm new to the Wii scene. I have knowledge in xbox 1 and 360. Are the drives of the Wii coded to the mother board of the machine? Or can the drives be switched? I had two machine modded at the same time and wondering if the drives were switched in the process. Both machines work but only one will Read Mario kart disc.

The drives can be switched without any problems, even between different region wiis.

Do you think switching drives would effect the Mario Kart disc from working?

What chips are in your Wiis? If you have a WiiKey that will not read Mario Kart, you need to update the chip to 1.9s. Then it should read your game.

Mod your gaming console today!

I believe it is a D2C and a D2E and the D2c is the problem. I didn't put the chips in so I'm not sure which chip went in. But from the mod website and my serial this is the chips that were installed. Will updating to 3.3 using a newer game help?

Do I need to know if it is a wiikey? If I try to update 1.9 and it is another chip can I screw something up?

If the drives are D2C and D2E then you dont have a wiikey. Wiikey only worked on D2B and earlier modchips

Is opening the machine the only way to tell the chip put in? I don't have a tri-driver. Is there another way to tell which chip is in the machine? Updating the Wii to 3.3 won't help at all?

No, opening the console is the only way.

You can eliminate various chips one at a time by trying to run the update disks for them and assuming that a failed update means its not that chip, but that's a rather difficult and imprecise way to go about it as not all chips have update disks.

Also, how do you intend to switch the drives without a tri-wing screwdriver?

Switching the drives would not be the issue. As stated above all drives work in all Wii systems no matter the region.

As to the modchip you had installed. Why not get in touch with the moder and ask them what they installed. Did you get a receipt for your order that list the modchip? It still amazes me how many users get their Wii systems modded and don't even know the modchip that has been installed.

What firmware does the Wii have?

What specific chipset is on the drive D2C/D2C2/D2E?

What Modchip is installed and what version of Modchip is it (Example:if it is a D2Pro is it a ver1/ver2/ver3?)

Do other original/backups work on the Wii that is not playing MK?

What error or what is happening when trying to play MK (you say it isn't working but that doesn't help much).

Is the MK disc original or backup?

If it is a backup...

Has it been region patched?

Wii Brick Blocked?

Trucha Signed?

What brand (type of media) are you using to burn the backup?

What program are you using to burn it?

What speed are you burning it at?

Wii drives can be picky and if you use cheap media there is always a possibility that 1 Wii could read the backup and the other would not.

There are so many other variables to discuse rather then waisting time on the switching of drive issue because that wouldn't cause any issue.
