I was wondering if anyone out there can help me out. I'm in the market to get a new 360. My last one crapped on me that I was just tired of fixing it after multiple RROD. Does anyone know based on the serial number of the unit if it's the new liteon drive. Without taking the unit out of the box. Is there a hack on the way for the new liteon drive.

You can read the serial number with an RS-232 to TTL conversion chip. Then you have to flash an older DVD drive with the info you got from the LiteOn and stick the old drive into the xbox. As of now the LiteOns cannot be modified, but that may eventually get fixed.

The good news is that if your old DVD is still OK, you can flash it and use it in your new box and hold on to the LiteOn until there is a fix for it.
