After searching this forum for information regarding swapping a Liteon drive for a like drive I have turned up no results. My apologies if I've failed to unearth an appropriately instructive jewel.
I don't want to modify the drive in any way, I just want to replace a defective DG-16D2S with a like drive and have it function properly. This box is used purely for recreational purposes and is usually on XBLive when in use. It always operates with original disks and I have no need of flashing the drive for ulterior purposes.
As I recall, early in the life of the 360 it was discovered that the PCB could be removed from one drive and placed into another drive of like model and firmware and all would function correctly. Has anyone experimented with the DG-16D2S to determine whether or not this is true for this drive?

you cant swap out the lite-on for another drive but not for another lite-on, also no matter what you do, if you do it yourself instead of my, you are considereding to be modding it in some way shape or form, and there for could be risking your console getting banned when you connect to XBL.

If you have a LiteOn drive, it must be less than a year old. Isn't it still under warranty? If it is, just get a replacement. If not, you probably shouldn't get banned. If you do, just buy another Arcade console unless you want to send it in to M$ and pay $100+ plus shipping for a repair.

It would be most likely that if you have 2 lite on drives of the same model and revision and swap the boards from one to another there would be no way it would look different to xbox live.

I bought the box in 2005 and sent it for repair a couple of months ago. It came back with this Liteon drive. It's my understanding that Microsoft have extended the warranty for all RROD incidents to 3 years, but all other failures (like this frikkin drive that only lasted 2 months....manufacture date is May 2008 for cryin' out loud) are only covered for the original one year.

If I can't get a new Liteon to work (I found one on ebay for a whopping $0.99 plus $10 shipping...so what am I really out if it doesn't work?) I'll go and buy a new box with an HDMI output.

I hope you're right, gregy. Isn't the chip that contains the firmware actually on the pcb? I assumed (a dangerous proposition, I know) that if the MoBo sees the original firmware and electronic bits it wouldn't know that the hardware that the electronics drive has been changed.
BTW, for reference, the problem with the current drive is as follows: On startup, the drive reads nothing. The dashboard simply states "open tray" in the disk drive slot. After opening and closing the drive a few times it will either begin to read the game disk as a movie or as an unreadable bit of media. All this time, I never hear the drive spool up, though the disk changes rotational alignment, so I know it's spinning, only it's spinning very slowly (too slowly to hear). After a few minutes (usually between 8 and 10 minutes) the I'll begin to hear the drive spool up when the tray closes. At this point the drive will read the media enough to get to the start screen on most games, but will seize up shortly thereafter. Finally, after 10 to 15 minutes of warmup, the drive reads the game and functions normally.
The times mentioned have gotten longer over time. When the problem originally surfaced, the drive might malfunction once or twice on startup, then read properly. The problem got progressively worse until it arrived at the point I described above.
The progressive nature of the problem leads me to believe that this is a mechanical problem, not an electronic one. I think an electronic issue would allow the unit to either work or not work, but nothing in between. I think a bearing in the drive is in the process of consuming itself, and won't function correctly until it gets enough heat from the GPU heat sink to open up its internal clearances and allow the drive to spin up to full speed.

Thanks for the advice, homesick. I think you meant I CAN (not cant...sik) swap the liteon for another drive by flashing an earlier drive and spoofing the liteon. I knew that this was possible, but I want to retain the "pristine" nature of the box, as it is almost exclusively used on Live. As a bit of help, should my meddling cause this box to be banned, how do I go about clearing the cache on the hard drive (I've read threads where some claim to have had new boxes banned because the new owner failed to clear an old cache) to prevent problems moving forward when I plug this hard drive into a new console? As the only senior member of the board to respond so far, your opinion is greatly valued and your help is greatly appreciated.

OK....now the definitive answer, for those who might wanna leave a Liteon in their box and maintain the status quo.
A Liteon drive of a equal hardware and firmware numbers CANNOT be swapped directly for another. This results in a drive that will read CDs and DVDs, but not games.
However, you can simply swap the mechanical bits around and it works fine. In my case I removed the entire mechanical/optical package from one drive and mounted in the other and this resolved the problem. Basically I kept the original printed circuit board and replaced the rest with goodies from a culled new drive from eBay.
Hope this helps someone down the road. All in all, the knowledge required for this swap is minimal, as is the investment of time. I estimate it took me 15 or 20 minutes to do the whole thing.
