I had no problems with original discs or backups with wiikey. I installed the homebrew channel, games would play for about five minutes before I would get an error screen. Now it won't read any disc, even if I leave the recovery disc in for 30 min. I have 3.2U all NTSC games. Could using the homebrew iso installer do this and if so can it be fixed?

I took it apart and when I put a disc in it spins for about three seconds then stops. I could really use some help.

update... after dismanteling the system it will now accept the 1.9s disc and the 1.4 config disc. It will play all gc games but no wii games original or backup. Anyone, any thoughts?

Make sure all soldering connections are connected good (no cold soldering joints). Also make sure the system isn't shorting the Wiikey when putting the system back together. To avoid this you could place tape over the Wiikey.

I put in a lens cleaning disc a couple of times and then I was able to play original and backup wii games again for a while then I had the same problem where the disc wouldn't spin. After unpluging the power and inserting different discs several times everything was working again for a while.
I dismantled the system again and cleaned the lens with a q-tip and again everything would work for a while, now nothing works again.
The laser reads for a few seconds then shuts off and the disc stops spinning.

Do your orginals/backups still work with homebrew uninstalled?

Whats so stupid about the question? All i was asking was if the backup discs still worked w/ hbc uninstalled? Its not like I was saying to uninstall hbc and NOT use it PERIOD. I was just ruling out factors.
Try a miticulous uninstall then re-install, maybe you missed somthing.

It is not your bad.

funboyste is wrong.

smokestac has a Wiikey so Wii backup games should boot even if HBC is uninstalled. It was a good suggestion to try uninstalling the HBC and to see if the Wii Original/Backups will work again.

There is always a possibility that the Wiikey GC part is stable enough to inject the code but maybe all connections are not stable to inject code for the Wii backups properly.

To me it sounds like this could be a cold soldering joint. When the Wii is tuned off and cooled down the soldering joint could become stable. After you turn it on and the Wii heats up the soldering joint could heat up enough and become unstable this giving you the read errors. After you shut it down and clean the lens the joint will cool down and become stable again.

I would still try desoldering the Wiikey and then resolder it making sure all soldering joints are done properly. Shiny and not bridging. Then put tape over all soldering joints and tape over the Wiikey to make sure no shorts are made.

I left the wii disconnected overnight and it still won't read any discs. I took it apart and put in a disc and now I can't see the laser light at all, that's why the disc stops spinning. I have put in over a thousand hours on the system in the last year and a half so maybe the laser is just burned out. Any thoughts on that?

Have you tried anything we have suggested yet?

Uninstall HBC?

Unsolder the Wiikey see if it plays originals?

Then try resoldering it see if it will play Backups?

If not why should we recommend anything else if you don't try the previous things we have suggested.

If the Wii can play GC games then I doubt it is the laser.

You could also try using the Wiikey recovery disc in case the Wiikey firmware has an issue. Then reinstall the 1.9s firmware.

Larrlje is right, if the laser is still reading GC games it most likely is not the culprit (not ruling it out, but very low odds). I suggested uninstalling hbc before becuase in your first post u mentioned everything was fine before the hb intall. It couldve been a bug in one of the apps or anything. So it wouldnt hurt to ununstall/reinstall since it only takes a couple minutes. Also dont re-install the same files u used before, i would try fresh and finding them again fr a reputable source. If that doesnt work, resolder the job miticulously. If you didnt solder yourself i would back to the person who did and explain the situation so they can re-solder the chip.
Hope it works out

I forgot to mention before that the first thing that I did when I started having problems was to uninstall hbc and that didn't help.
As of now it will not read any wii or gc backup or original discs.
I tried the recovery disc before it stopped reading discs entirely and that didn't help.
The only one of your suggestions that I haven't tried is to unsolder the wiikey and that is because I can't find my soldering iron so I'll have to pick one up tomorrow.
I'm a bit worried about not being able to see the laser light anymore.

When the HBC is uninstalled by deleting it through the Channel manager in Wii settings, is it a clean uninstall that removes ALL traces of HBC or does it leave files here and there?

when you install the disc loader using the homebrew channel there is a dvd driver that gets loaded. If your problems started when you installed the iso loader then that may be your problem. I have installed the iso loader in the homebrew channel using the twilight hack several times with no problems but I have never tried doing it on a system that has a wiikey installed also. What would be your motivation for loading the iso loader when you already have a wiikey installed? Just curious.

I guess deleting HBC channel using the Wii settings menu still leaves traces of the program in the logs and other places. Will a Wii system format after deleting the channel clear out the logs and tickets that relate to HBC's existence?

I used the hbc iso disc because I thought it would be faster and easier to install instead of using the twilight hack.
I've been too busy to pick up another soldering iron yet but when I do I will remove the wiikey and see if I'm able to play original discs.
If that doesn't work, I'll borrow a friends system and swap out the disc drives just to see if that works, if it doesn't, formatting the wii system memory would be the last resort before sending it in to nintendo for repair.
I'll let you all know how it goes.

Ok, first of all, I tried to play a game again without doing anything and it would recognize the disc in the channel sometimes but usually I would get a disc read error and if I was able to play I would get the same error as soon as it would start loading. I removed the wiikey and no luck. I borrowed a friends console and switched disc drives and it worked perfectly. I then put my disc drive in his console and it didn't work so it must be a problem with the laser.
It must have been a fluke that it stopped working properly when I installed the hbc.
I wonder if I sent it to nintendo through the ssbb free cleaning if that would work since I have the original ssbb disc and it doesn't work.

I sent in the console to nintendo for repair using the ssbb free cleaning last week. I got it back today and the repair order said I had a faulty laser so they replaced the drive.
I opened up the console and the drive has d2c written on it. I guess that's it for the wiikey.
I was thinking of getting a d2pro with wiiclip so I don't have to worry about soldering the thing on, would that be my best bet? I have ntsc and pal backups of wii and gc, some brick blocked. I was just wondering which chip has the highest compatibility.

They all have pretty much the same game compatibility. Just get a Modchip that supports D2C drives.
