Just a few tips and a bit of info from my own experience. Please leave your own comments on it.

When burning 4x Media at 6x or 8x it is more important not to be running IE or other heavy use applications. So far i have burned unbranded Ritek, RiDATA and Traxdata at 8x. These were all DVD-R. The best results i had were with the RiDATA. One of the Traxdatas didnt work at all, the other worked but during the transfer tests i noticed some discrepencies. RiDATA was virtually perfect.

I'll post my media tests on htttp://www.chrismccann.co.uk for 6x and 8x on all three types of discs. I will also be receiveing from Ritek some -R/RW and some +R/RW at 4x as well as the new +R 8x disc later this week or next week. These will also be tested fully and listed. I'll be doing 4 of each disc in the test under the same system environment.

The Arita 4x +R media from meritline.com burns at 8x on my Plextor 708A without issue. I have a sneaking suspicion that Norton Antivirus 2004 interferes with Nero burns -- so I disable it before burning and the rare problems have vanished. No, I wan's burning infected files, but thanks for playing.

Need some coasters?

Pioneer A-07D, flashed (Nil) to burn all -R media at 6X and 8X.

So far this is what I've found:

Memorex 4X DVD+R before flash--> 3 coasters trying to get it to work.

Maxell 4X DVD+R before flash--> burned at 4X.

Imation DVD RW (after quick erase) before flash--> burned at 1X.

Verbatim "Digital Movie" DVD-R 4X after flash--> burned at 8X

Memorex DVD-R 4X after flash--> Coaster.

All attempts were made using Nero 6.
Failed burns had this error from Nero:

Sense Key: 0x04 (KEY_HARDWARE_ERROR)
Sense Code: 0x44
Sense Qual: 0x00

#34 CDR-1061 File Writer.cpp,Line 301
Internal target failure

I'm going to reinstall my A-06 so I can use the rest of my Memorex media.
The Verbatim media is very expensive so I'll be looking for a better deal.
The 8X burn took 8 minutes, I noticed a band on the disc, about 10mm wide. The initial part of the burn was at 6X I belive.

I've only tried two types on my Plextor PX-708A but both turned out wonderfully and burned in just over 8 minutes.

Taiyo Yuden DVD+R (Plextor branded, supplied with drive)

TDK 4X DVD+R (RICOHJPNR01)

Very interested in this band myself. I too have similar bands on many, but not all of my media forced at higher speeds than recommended on the disc. I also believe that it may be the disc burning at 6x before reaching the 8x mark.
