ERROR: Episodes ripped to DVD become stuck at 00:00, burned disc will not play
TOOLS: DVD Decrypter, DVD Shrink
(I'm trying to put as many search terms in this as I can since I didn't find anything like my case in Google even though I figure this has come up before.)
I'm trying to rip episodes of my DVD collection to bring to work (stuff was stolen from desk areas before and I don't have a locker.) On episodes of the TV show Arrested Development, I was redoing the DVD structure rather than compress the video to fit DVD5. I am having a problem with playback of certain episodes of the show - not all episodes, just certain ones (it may be one batch of discs, and it may be a copyright/protection problem?)
PROCESS: First, I ripped all episodes with DVD Decryptor, no errors in the rip. Next, I used DVD Shrink 3.2 and the re-author feature to pull the VOBs individually (adding and/or subtracting episodes for each new DVD output as best fit without compression needed.) Again, no errors reported in processing the DVD folder output. Then I burned the discs (using Nero 8.)
RESULTS: Upon playback, the first few discs worked flawlessly. However, by about disc 6 (which may or may not have equated with the DVD Season 2 set of the show), video has gotten stuck. The disc loads as a DVD, goes to the first file (no menu since it's re-authored), plays it, goes to frame 00:00 (black frame) and then gets stuck. I cannot fast-forward or press play to advance. If I hit Chapter Advance, my player (PlayStation 3) says it is moving to the next chapter but the time counter doesn't move; I cannot advance past Title 1 with Chapter Advance.
FURTHER CIRCUMSTANCES: I thought maybe this was something about the burn or the ripped discs, but I went to disc 5 and played it - four of the episodes ran fine, then the last episode stopped on black 00:00, same as the 'broken' discs, so it's got to be something about the VOBs. I can play the VOBs just fine from the DVD folders on my PC (which makes copyright concerns sound iffy), but the burned DVDs will not play the video on my player. Whatever the copyright problem could be with the VOBs, I don't get that problem with discs 9 or 10, so either they changed their protection in the Season 3 set or there's some other problem outside of protection. Only the VOBs are being pulled in the re-authored rips and I'm not doing anything unusual about editing the VOBs, no recompression and very little editing (I think I may have removed subtitles for the re-authored discs, but that would have been all of them, not just some.)
Anybody know why this problem would come up and have a troubleshooting solution? I've moved on to other approaches to making the disc, but I still would appreciate an answer if this comes up again.
