Nero Recode 3 crashes when encoding!

When I'm trying to use recode to convert my dvds to Nero Digital AVC, the entire computer freezes for about 5 seconds then I get a blue screen STOP error, usually followed by an automatic restart. I've noticed this only when encoding in AVC, and only during the 2nd pass (encoding). 1-pass encoding doesn't eliminate the problem. However, this problem only happens about 1 out of 3 times. Sometimes the encode completes fine. I think that it might have to do with the encoder Recode uses to make its AVC files (does anyone know what file it is?). I've also had this problem with H.264/AVC encoding in other programs, such as MKV2VOB. I'm running Windows Vista Ultimate.
