While I am sure that this has been covered somewhere, my 10 minute search of the forums didn't turn up anything of substance. If I made a stupid mistake and just overlooked something, please point me in the right direction.
I have a Wiikey-modded US Wii. It has 3.2U and the wiikey has been updated to play SMG.
I want to upgrade to 3.3U, as I think that it may allow me to play my Wario World Shake (J) (name?), Fatal Frame 4 (J), and Tales of Symphonia (J)... all of which want to update my system. That would cause problems as these all have Japanese firmware updates on them, and as I mentioned earlier in my post, my Wii is from the US.
So... are there any problems with upgrading my firmware to 3.3U? Has anyone had their system get bricked by it? Will it prevent me from playing GC backups, Wii backups, or homebrew stuff? I am not TOO worried about homebrew, as I haven't messed around with it yet, and don't have any immediate plans to do so.
I DO know that there is a firmware downgrader, but I would rather not have to mess around with something like that, in the case that 3.3U were to have a negative impact on my Wii.
Any help with this matter would be really appreciated.
I used the downgrade, it is working, but it took me a day to understand how to...
I suggest using freeloader; Insert it to the wii console, wait for the screen "confirmation", eject the disc, insert it again, wait again for the confirmation screen, eject and then insert you game - what a magic - the game either does not ask for firmware upgrade, OR, if it asks - you can choose the u[pgrade, the scroll bar will run really fast, it tricks the wii as it has been upgraded, but actually it does not. Search for "freeloader" at youtube for video example, anyway - it worked great for me.
To summarize: 3.3 blocks truncha-signed disks and it temporarily blocked the twilight hack. Truncha disks can be booted through gecko OS in the homebrew channel and the twilight hack was fixed after a couple days.
Penguin: What exactly is a Truncha-signed disc? I did a quick scour, and saw out of region games being called truncha-signed discs. Since I play a lot of Japanese games on my Wii, being locked in to playing only US NTSC games would be quite a pity.
For the time being, I will be sticking with my current setup. I guess I will just have to wait for Tales, Fatal Frame, and Wario to make their way to America. Oh well...
Speaking of which, Wario should already be out by now.. Too bad I want it the least of the above listed three...
trucha signed discs are modified ones. i would update, then install homebrew channel and use any region changer to install 3.2 of your region. you get to keep the advantages of the update (mii channel, compatability etc.) without the blocks of tp hack or trucha. u need 3.2 to recover from a brick
Even if you update to 3.3U the update on the Import game will be requested still. It wants to install the Japanese Weather/News channel to your Wii system.
Your best option is to use Wii Brick Blocker on the Imports. This is a PC based application that disables the update on the disc.
