Hi guys,

This was the score...
I'm trying to figure a way to flash the Hitachi 79 drive. I've flashed plenty of samsungs and the older hitachis as well as a few benq's but this one is starting to get to me.

i have two options, persist with this unlock disk i've been playing around with or spoof another drive that i have.

the unlock disk, i've done everything i should need to, gotten the drive into b, recognised in windows, put in the cd but it wont play the disk, says its dirty or soemthing to that effect, have been through maybe ten or so different cd's with no joy.

the other option, i have another drive in an older 360 thats happily flashed (but on last legs) I think i can take the Dvd key from the hitachi and spoof the firmware and so on, only problem is that this is new territory from me and was wondering if anyone out there could shed some light on it.

is it possible ot extract the 79 key with it in mode b and detected in windows using maximus toolbox etc??
what would i need to do to spoof it so it doesn't f*@&% up
and
has anyone had any issues with this unlock cd???? - it's my esiest way of getting it to work but it just wont read the disk / play the song...

now...
this is the score..

the unlock cd is now playing fine and it unlocks a charm, now the prob lies with maximus toolbox, the prog hangs / freezes for forever when trying to do a raw dump and then tells me that there is no gdr drive detected.

after a few retries....

the drive is detected in windows and toolbox before the unlock command is used, after that windows doesn't recognise it anymore...

any ideas anyone...???

i've followed the guides to the letter, watched the video several times and tried everythign i could think of, even using different ports etc...

it shows up in win before using the 79unlock command but as soon as i do that it can't ben seen by either win or toolbox.
both windows and toolbox recognise drive before unlocking but can't do anything until unlocked -

GAAAAAAAAAAAAAH

Someone out there help!!!! am in need of genius!!

Are you putting in a retail 360 disk after you use the unlock79 cd?
I'm pretty sure that's what the tuts say do before you open up firmware toolbox.

I'VE TRIED DOING IT SEVERAL DIFFERENT WAYS, HAVE FOLLOWED THE VIDEO THAT PODGER PUT ON YOUTUBE, HE UNLOCKS THEN PUTS IN DVD THEN OPENS TOOLBOX, HAVE TRIED THAT AS WELL AS THE OTHER WAY ROUND AND I STILL GET THE SAME RESULT.

THE DRIVE SHOWS UP IN WINDOWS UNTIL I TRY AND USE IT, THEN IT HANGS AND GOES PETE TONG, TOLBOX TAKES FOREVER AND THEN TELLS ME IT CAN'T FIND THE DRIVE, IN PODGERS VID, WHEN HE OPENS TOOLBOX IT FINDS THE DRIVE WITHIN SECONDS.

I'M STILL NO CLOSER TO GETTING IT SORTED, HAVE YOU ANY OTHER IDEAS..???

One suggestion is that the length of the sata cable maybe too long.
I think mine is 18" long but it works for me. Is yours longer or is it already pretty short?

why would the length of the cable effect the flashing???

its about the same size though, 16 - 18" or so.

i've just tried to flash / read the firmware using the old flash22 (xlg) method, still no joy, as soon as the drive is unlocked it freezes everything else and i can't do anythin with it, starting to wonder whether or not it's a dodgy version of the prog that i got but then everything else is ok so i don't see how that can be the case...

FFS!!!

I thought I had read somewhere that the length of the sata cable could cause a problem in the drive being recognized in windows. I don't recall an explanation as to why.

Are you able to eject the drive through explorer on your pc?
I know with the two 79's I've done I also had to hit the eject button a couple of times where the tut never noted that it needed to be done.

I also reread podger's tut and it was noted that RAID needed to be disabled. Do you know if yours is or not?

So just to clarify,
You pause the track after it's played through and hit the eject button.

Then you open up the command prompt and type unlock79 x where x is the dvd drive listed in explorer and you get the "done" prompt which signals that you can open up firmware tool box.

Is all that correct?

almost,

play track through
play track and pause straight away
close media player
eject disk using 360
open cmd at unlock folder
79unlock e
get the error and completed message after a minute or so, indicating drive is unlocked
open toolbox - choose the option from tools menu, toolbox locks up and says no gdr drives available
at this poitn i can no longer access the drive through windows etc
the drive also wont eject or do anythin at all until i turn 360 off
when i hit eject the light flashes repeatedly and then stops

thats the issue...

hope that might've shed some further light, and pray you know the solution :D

When I've done them I pause the track and hit eject within about a second of pausing it. I leave the media player opened the entire time and don't close it until after I'm done.

However once you eject the unlock 79 cd you are supposed to insert a retail xbox 360 game and hit the eject button 3 times so that the drive tray stays closed. Then exit any autoplay pop ups, which I don't get because the white "insert this disk into a xbox 360" screen shows up on my media player that I left opened. THEN I open up firmware toolbox and follow the tut from there.

Try it in that order because it reads like you are skipping the retail disk part.

good luck.

[edit] I just reread your earlier post that noted you are using the retail 360 disk. I'm not sure I can offer any advice above what I've said or the tut offers but it has worked for me.

you could be right, althought i followed the vid exact

as soon as the unlock disk is out, i unlock the drive then insert disk then open toolbox but literally the second that the unlock is done the drive is virtually dead, won eject or anythign.

someone else has suggested trying to flash on another pc but that is a lot of hardship and doesn't make that much sense, if i can get this far on this pc then changing it shouldn't matter...i hope

although..

can you write down what you did witha load of details please?
i'll follow yours to the letter, stages would be good.

cheers again!

I used this and never even watched a video.
Very simple and clear.

Again good luck.

cheers for the link dude although i've already tried All of that.

BTW - I figured I'd give up on trying to flash that one for a bit until i finish moving, then i might sort out the other pc and try with tat one as well.

But...I had a spare 360 lying about that I was going to try and fix - had the 3rod, figured, fuck it and got it working, when i turned it on, turns out it was already flashed!!! BONUS!!! I must've done it ages ago and forgot!!!

the only downside is that it's not hdmi cable compatible so i lose out on the 1080 i/p but the component is 720p anyways so i figuer i'll manage, notice the downgrade in picture quality though :D

Beggars can't be choosers., thanks again for all your help!!

steve,

one thing I noticed while I was doing it is that the xbox dvd drive goes to some sort of "sleep mode" unless you are quick. it kept going to sleep on me and then disappearing from explorer in the middle of doing things. then whenever i tried to unlock or use toolbox, it would lag forever and then give me errors

I set up a shortcut to cmd.exe that points to the directory with unlock79 and pretyped the command. Made a shortcut to toolbox on the desktop and I got the whole tools -> direct dump etc. etc. process down that I could do the whole thing in about 15 seconds :) don't do it while watching the youtube tutorial, I found that my drive went to sleep if i went step by step with it.

i got it to work after about a hour so don't give up!
