Play NTSC on PAL with D2Pro9

I've searched and have come up with conflicting answers. Can someone please tell me if I can play NTSC backups on a PAL console that has the latest D2Pro9 installed? I believe this chip claims to be 'Region-Free', but some reports I have read state that I'll still need to patch the ISO's to make them region free.

Not all Imports are region compatible. Different options you have can make the compatibility higher for you.

The D2Pro9 has region free capabilities. To enable region free after instillation of modchip you where supposed to first insert a game that was the same region as your Wii system. This set the region of the Modchip and region override. The Modchips region free capabilities are average.

Some region patcher's have a better compatibility then region override capabilities of Modchips. So using those can make the Import game more compatible for region free use. But there is still a better option rather then using patcher's.

In my opinion the most compatible region free capability option is using a homebrew application called GeckoOS. This is launched via Homebrew Channel (recommended) or by Twilight princess hack.

This way you can try playing the Import game via D2Pro9 region free capabilities first. If that doesn't work then launch Gecko OS via Homebrew Channel or Twilight Princess hack and boot the game via that.
