Hi,

I bought a Japanese Wii and downgraded it from 3.3J to 3.2U.
Now I can see the Wii Menu in English instead of Japanese but it can't read any disc either Wii original and/or backup discs.

In the downgrade procedure (AnyRegion) I changed the System region to USA but kept the DVD region to Japan.

My Wii has Mod Chip to play any region DVD but I don't know what kind of chip it has (Wiikey or D2C)?

Any help is appreciated.
Thanks,

ajhits

Folks,

Any ideas.
Do I need to update any setting for Wiikey?

I think you might have screwed yourself doing that. Anyone else who might know more think so too? It's never a good idea to apply an update (or downgrade) to your wii that is from another region.

Why would you keep the disc channel region setting the same? Why not change it all? This could be your issue. But it also could be the firmware on your Modchip that is causing the issue as well.

If you have a Wiikey and used the Wiikey with the NTSC(J) firmware and you do have a Wiikey then yes you will probably have to reinstall the Wiikey firmware since it is region based. You will more then likely have to use the Wiikey recovery disc first to recover it to stock then use the 1.9s USA firmware update.

If you have a D2CKey then you will have to redo the jumper settings for region USA.

If you have a D2Pro9 wire then I don't know how to change it since you are supposed to set region by inserting a region disc first that your Wii system is.

Thanks for the response.

I did change all the regions and tried. Didn't work either.
I think it is the Modchip locked onto Jap region.

How to find out for sure what kind of Modchip is there.
Do I need to open the Wii to physically look at the chip.

Are there any pictures on web to distinguish one from another.

Thanks,

Why didn't you know what modchip it had before buying the Wii?

It still surprises me how many users don't know what Modchip they have. That is very important information to know. How do you expect to keep your Modchip firmware up to date if you have no idea what Modchip you have.

Either find out what Modchip it has by calling or contacting the place you bought it from.

Or open up the Wii and take a picture of it and post it here so we can help you identify it.

I just found out that it does recoganize the Wiikey 1.2 config disc as Gamecube disc. I can run the Wiikey Configuration and change the Region Override.

But still can't get it to recoganize the Wii game discs.

As larrylje said above you may need to run the 1.9b recovery disc then upgrade the firmware to 1.9s(U), if it is indeed a WiiKey with (jap) firmware. This means you will need to make 2 discs, 1.9b recovery, and 1.9s (U). Put the recovery disc in the wii and leave it alone for 5-10 minutes. It likely will seem like it is not doing anything. That's what is supposed to happen. Then reset the Wii. put in the 1.9s(U) disc and run the update.
