I don't think it would work. Each controller is meant to play as 1 player. If you would modify it so 2 controllers are the same player, the console wouldn't know what to do. If you went one way and the other player went the other, the commands would get misread.

That does sound like a cool "co-op" type idea. Much easier than playing hand-off with a controller in the middle of a fight.
