Arita = Ritek. Slow down your burn speed, whether they are dual layer or single (dvd-9dvd-5) Your drive like many others will dictate how fast you can write, depending on what type of media is inserted(accepted). As a general rule burn at half the media's rated speed.
It pains me to say...yet again, use Verbatim or Taiyo Yuden or at absolute worst.......there are TDK's.
Quote:"could not perform start of disc at once" error.
The perils of using cheap media blanks.
If you can get hold of Taiyo's or Verbatims then dang the expense. Taiyo Yuden's here in Australia are considerably more expensive, and I'm not entirely sure they are genuine considering how they are packaged. Shrink wrapped with no definite identification marks.....is not my idea of a quality company.
However they do enjoy a considerably good reputation here at AD.
Ritek makes DL discs that are close to Verbatim's in quality but are not as well supported as Verbatim DL media. However, that does not apply to every disc that leaves the factory. When Ritek is an OEM supplier to recognized brand names or their own brands, the product is usually trustworthy. Unbranded bulk packs, "no-name" brands, and unbelievable deals are often warnings about B- or C-grade material a factory has sold off rather than scrap.
On the other hand, Toshiba drives are notorious for very limited firmware compatibility and even more limited firmware support. The fact that a different model of Toshiba drive in your brother's drive worked with the discs while your drive got an immediate error suggests that the problem lies in lack of support for the Ritek DL discs in your drive. All I can suggest is that you look for a firmware update to see if that works or get an external drive such as a Lite-on, Plextor, Pioneer, or NEC model.
