How do studios re-release older movies in blu-ray format?

the same theory goes for movies that were originally released in VHS format and then later find them released on DVD. What does it take to transform an original movie in DVD quality and release it in Blu-ray format?

Does the orignial movie recorded at say 420 or 720p become 1080p true hd on blue ray?

please help me make sense of this.

In a nutshell...

The original movie the studio shot is a lot larger than, say, a dvd. They compress it to fit on a dvd. When it's re-released on Blu Ray, it's made from the original source.

Blu ray can hold so much more information than dvds so they are going back to the studios and releasing all the footage that couldn't fit on the dvd. So you get all the extra scenes, out takes, story boards and everything inbetween. Anything that was movie related is thrown on a blu ray disc and there's still more room left.

Check out this link, it will help you understand why there was no competition in the format war.

amazing thanks a lot for your help. Can i ask how the movie studio compresses the original movie which was shot very large to fit on a dvd? is there any special software or hardware they use to compress the task?
