So I am right now stuck in update mode. My PS3 was working fine with the 2.42 firmware. When I updated to 2.50 it bricked on me. I keep getting an error at 67%. I called Sony and they first told me it was my internet connection. So I made sure I had a wired connection...same thing. 67%. Called back and I get no help. Show proof of purchase or pay $150. No other options. Sony's software bricked my system. What now?

tell them the firmware did it. there is known problems with the 2.42 firmware crashing ps3 and they dont read media after it freezes and you are forced to restart it.but people are able to get free repairs. just push harder. i dunno what else. just htought i give you a heads up

I told them that their firmware screwed it up. The rep said it was black and white. Give proof of purchase or pay $150. He said I couldn't even talk to a supervisor!!! I am very unsatisfied with Sony. At least Microsoft gives you a 3 year warranty with the 360. Sony is just piss poor.

well, worst case, can you always do the method that everyone else took for the previous firmware bricking, where they took out their hard drive, and wiped it? Granted you would lose your saves, but atleast you don't have to pay 150 bucks.

My PS3 did something similar. When I was updating, it stopped at 67% and restarted several times. I switched it off using the switch on the back. Started it back up. The ps3 started updating and stopped and could not get past 67% so I turned it off again. This time on the second try of updating it went through. In the end it worked. Just thought I would share my experience.

Microsoft only did that to avoid a class action suit, but it doesn't matter anymore as they have one now brewing in California. As for M$'s warranty, it wasn't always like that. Why doesn't anyone remember the 360 only came with a 90 day warranty when released! Imagine how many people got screwed because of that with the RROD. Also the proof of purchase (receipt) requirement is an industry standard so as to avoid fraudulent activity so while I do understand and agree that the firmware caused your issue it is not Sony's fault (or any other manufacturers) that someone cannot provide proof of purchase information when needed.

I installed from a SD card to start with. So I KNOW it has the whole correct update on the HDD. I guess I am just going to have to wipe the HDD and start over. Maybe with a clean HDD it will update to 2.50 cleanly.

I don't think that would help. The firmware update isn't in the
harddrive it's on a chip on the motherboard if I read right.

that's what everyone had to do on the other firmware update that bricked everyone's ps3. If they didn't want to send it in to sony, there was a method to wipe the hard drive to clear it and basically start over.

need jtag help? Xbox 360 console repair? PM me or chat

Well I wiped the HDD clean. Reformatted to a FULL 80gb FAT32 file system (not the 32gb junk Windows does) and now I have nothing. I turn on my system and I get no video output at all. It sits there and then like a minute later just shuts itself off.

WTF? Does Sony's crap really suck this bad?

Oner, comon now man. Yes, we all love Sony but that doesnt mean their business tactics are always correct. I think it's shady that they wont service the guy. WHen I had two of my PS3's brick on me they didnt even ask for a receipt. If you something messes up on you that you bought from walmart or any other big chain do you need a receipt? And there not even the manufactures! When a product clearly says Sony on it and it's their fault they should fix it, receipt or not. Or atleast accept the thing and do a diagnostic on it, if its the users fault charge them, if not then fix it.

Thank you. I'm not trying to get something for free here. Their software update messed up my system. I don't care if it's in or out of warranty this should be an easy fix. I mean its obvious if I shipped it to them and they turned it on and saw was what was going on that it was their software failure. If someone could intentionally make a system do this they need to be hired by Sony to sniff out firmware problems. Still hoping for a solution.

Is it possible to ghost a PS3 HDD? If I found someone with a working HDD could I copy it bit for bit and maybe get back up and running?

You could try a different drive. I use a 320 gig drive in my ps3. I really don't think thats going to cure your problem though. Next time I would save the update to a flash drive with your pc then update off that.

Whats the difference in saving to a flash drive and saving to a SD card? They are both external media.

Have you reset the video (holding down the power button until it beeps again)? Maybe with no settings to draw on since you formatted your hard drive it's outputting to the cable?

And external media is external media, SD or USB flash shouldn't matter.

Yeah I tried that as well. A lot. Its running on the stock A\V cable anyway so it should revert to that cable since it is the default setup.

No I have not. I wiped the HDD which didn't work. Actually hurt. Then I took said wiped HDD and put it into a working PS3. It reformatted my HDD right away. I stuck it back into my broken PS3 hoping it would recall firmware 2.42. Nothing. Black screen and no sound. I have stopped fooling with it hoping to find a fix.
