tried just about everything..
tried the x-clamp replacement...still got the 3 reds
tried the penny trick...still got the 3 reds.
using artic silver paste..
is it possible that you can't resurrect your xbox 360 from the 3 red lights.?? or is there always a way..??
don't really know if i want to try to heat gun it..
i actually had it working for about 1 month doing the x-clamp replacement, then one day, out of the blue.. 3 red lights. and haven't been able to fix it..liike i said tried everything thing, loosening, tightening the screws..everything.!!
its maddening! :(
any suggestions.?

it is possible to get an unfixxable rrod. It could be the gpu or cpu are fried. However you should check your secondary code and determine more specifically what the problem is.

everything? Replacing your thermal paste is a big one. There are a few rumors on the net saying that the little die off to the side of the gpu processor is a temp sensor. If the temp sensor doesn't see a ground with the heatsink it won't work. I'm not saying that this is your problem but if you've tried everything else just try to replace the thermal paste. Even if you already replaced it odds are you have too much on there, It really doesn't take much at all.
If all else fails put it back together and sell it on ebay... or find someone that has a reflow station and see if that will fix it.

Microsoft provide a 3-year warranty for this problem.. you should have called them up, they send out a courier to pick it up, they fix it then bring it back with a free month of Xbox Live.

Yeah... try sending it back they might not notice the pennies, the missing xclamps, the extra thermal paste not to mention the messed up stickers on the dvd and front of the console...
If i were you i'd check craigslist for a fix it or get your money back offer. More/less their experience with the rrod will pay off. You can read all the tutorials you want, but experience always trumps a tutorial.

While in this case it might not be very likely to send it back with all the internal mods, this statement is wrong. I had flashed my 360, and sent it back to MS when I had the rrod. I figured, what was the worst that will happen, they'll just send it back to me exactly as it is now. I wouldn't get in any worse of a situation. Two weeks to the day of sending it in, I got a refurb which is completely working. So I would still give it a shot.

don't i just need a fine layer of thermal paste on, cause that's i'll ive been using..like a small pea size just to cover the chips.???
i don't know. might just go buy a new one..

I have to agree with guessswho. As a man that makes good money through the M$ 3-year warranty I can safly say that they hardly check the warranty stickers let alone the insides of a system. So if you still cant get ur system to work just buy a $20 M$ sticker off of ebay and send that bad boy back in. Like guesswho said *What do you got to lose*.

Yes. Just enough to cover the die. Don't worry if you think you have too much on. The excess will just squeeze out. Really, you could dump a whole tube on. It'd just be a waste.
What you have to worry about is putting too little on.

bhetrick i really hate to correct you but if you put too much as5 on the processor you can jump points and short out things. AS5 will conduct electrictiy because the little flakes of silver in the compound. Not only that but too much paste will have the same effect as not having enough. I remember taking a computer architecture class and someone having heat sink paste running off the side of the processor onto the socket... yes it was disasterous. I really hope none of you are doing that...
Anyway just make sure you don't have any as5 along the sides, your processor should be a mirror finish before you apply any heat sink compound.
Make it look like that, apply a little bead and smooth it out with a razorblade. Then you'll know you're doing it correctly.

Ah yes, I do know that. My example was pretty over exaggerated. It can possibily short it out if one were using way too much. The op stated he was using a small-pea sized amount. I was just going by that. Pea sized could be a little more than what's needed, but wouldn't be too much to cause damage. It just depends on how big your Pees are. :)

haha yeah i just don't want some noob comming in here reading that he can dump a full tube of paste on his 360... Some people just shouldn't be messing with electronics, let alone computer hardware.

is the warranty stil intact or is it demolished? cos theres a grey line which is what microsoft look for to replace the xbox
has the warranty ended? if so then i wud try the towel trick but id that dont work id just sell it (trust me on ebay my m8 sold his broken one for £30.00) on ebay and save up for a cheap one or a broken one that you can fix
