Woke up today with a system update message on my system today. It says it is a shop channel update and the update will delete any modified game saves.

I have not updated the system yet but there have been some unconfirmed reports at Wiinewz HERE that say this update blocks the instillation of WAD files, Custom IOS, Downgraders, Region Changer and ISO boot loader.

How reliable that source is I do not know. Just wanted to warn people so they can keep an eye on the situation. I am sure more information will be released soon.

I expected them to go after the twilight hack (again) and the custom IOS. I'll have to keep watching to see if these reports are true.

Homebrew is by definition, a reactive project. Companies will always try to block homebrew and homebrew will always find a way around it, it just takes a little time.

stupid me, i downloaded the new update not even thinking.
i tried installing a couple wads this afternoon with no luck.

i remember this happened not too long ago with an update and an updated twilight hack was available within a few days. i hope that's the case again. i've currently got v0.1-beta1. anyone know if there's an updated one yet?

Ok, I've been researching a bit and what it sounds like to me is that the new update is blocking any homebrew that attempts to edit the firmware or wii system memory. That includes the wad installer, homebrew channel installer, custom IOS installer, exc...

But homebrew that does not attempt to get into the firmware or is already there is unaffected. So already installed homebrew channels still work and the twilight hack still runs. And of course hardware level stuff (modchips) are also unaffected.

All things considered, nintendo went pretty easy on the modding community. This sounds like it was an attempt to block wad piracy and of course the growing use of the softmod backup loader.

Of course as we've seen in the past, it will just be a matter of time before someone makes a new workaround.

So then would this technically be 3.4U for the Wii? Or just an update for the Wii Shop Channel? I also woke up to the Wii blinking at me and disregarded the update until I heard what it did.

I believe this is purely a shop update and firmware is still 3.3 but it certainly does damage !!!

{edit} strangely enough my wii hasn't blinked yet. Maybe its because I just moved it from Canada to the UK and they have found me yet :)

So I've heard, well, as long as we're a step ahead it shouldn't be that big of a deal, and yeah, maybe the move to UK threw Nintendo off guard, haha

Thank you for the info. But does this mean that homebrew that try and attempt to mod a game (such as ocarina homebrew) is blocked?

If all you do is play backups and they arent truncha signed then you should be fine. This update only effects homebrew.

i am starting to get affected my this update .... i have not installed the update as of yet and i am sitting at the original 3.3u without the shop channel update. I have a hard time finding ntsc games to download because i have almost all of them. So i have started downloading PAL games. I am smart enough not to update with an out of region game but am curious what will happen if i do the wii sys update VIA internet connection. I am still able to play spiderman web of shadows but when i insert new euro games i get prompted for a system update. Will this affect anything if all i do is play backups? i dont think i will be installing this update. I have kicked my self in the ass for going from 3.2u to 3.3u already.... plz help

You arent being effected by this update. The reason you're seeing system updates from out of region backup games is because when I game checks your firmware level it looks for a specific region. A game that uses 3.2e will look for 3.2e or a later e firmware version. If you have 3.3u it wont see it and will want to do an update.

Since it will be installing 3.2 though the wii is smart enough to know that regardless of region, 3.3 is more recent than 3.2. So you won't get bricked by running an older, out of region update. You'll just get duplicate channels.

New games though may contain 3.3 or the new version of 3.3. So you shouldn't update from them, especially if they're out of region.

Your best bet would be to run the games via Gecko Loader in Homebrew and just force them to NTSC

Or just use wii brickblocker so, the game does not ask for update. however, I have heard it does not work on all games.
