Ok So I just bought 2 Seagate Barracuda 500GB PATA / IDE Hard Drive, Ultra ATA/100, 7200RPM, 16MB, ST3500630A both of which are recertified. I am currently trying to run the makehd tool it runs fine but when I press 1 and then type xboxhd it says Linux CD not found? I have looked in my BIOS and no matter what the HD's will not show up in it. Could they both be dead? Or is it another problem all together I have the jumper set to master. The cdrom is sata though and the hd is IDE although this shouldn't make a difference. Anyone have any good ideas?

if the hard drives aren't recognized by your bios, try another pc. they should be recognized by the pc's bios, or else you'll probably won't get it to work.

maybe there is a bios limit for the ide controller, which prevents the bios from seeing the hard drive.

but you can always try to just use a ide cdrom drive on one of your ide controllers. maybe for some strange reason, the sata cd drive isn't recognized anymore by the linux boot cd after it has booted (after which you have to make the choice to build a new hd from scratch! if it from that point on only! looks on the ide controller for the cd for the necessary files, you will get the message that no cd is found. but i'm not sure though. but if you use an ide cdromdrive, that will not be an issue anymore ==> 1 variable less to be concerned about).

but both hard drives should be recognized by your computer bios, if not it will not work anyway. i had similar problems with my computer, so i used an old pentium 3 computer. that computer's mainboard works flawless, haven't had any harddrive that wasn't recognized. maybe your computer is a little bit too 'new'.

I have tried on an older computer with an IDE cable and now after I press 1 it says: Kernel Panic: No Init found. Try passing init= option to kernel. No idea what this means im not a linux guru so its kinda hard.

MOre updates Got this to go all the way past and back to orignal screen with options 1-8 but when I hit quit then type reboot its to rebooting the system it keeps trying and trying over and over again. So I rebooted manually. Tried locking the HDD as I thought it was through the process. Now its saying the HDD is Frozen and something about changing the IDE? Im really confused now.

Go into your bios and look for settings to change your ide device.

My bios looks like this

Keep pressing the + key until you see user then save and exit.

OK.. linux user comment about init= .. no runlevel is being specified.. For a command line only shell init=1 or init=2 will do nicely.

I think to see that there is something up either with your burned disk or your cd drive.

@C4RN1.. strewth. that's an old bios there.. especially the bios limit of 10.4 gigs

Does that affect hdm at all? I use an old cyrix 300 for my drive experiments. I would assume "auto" and then go into the autodetect hdd's would work better. Lots of newer drives aren't in the bios tables of these older machines, but you can edit the bios hdd tables if you can lay your hands on the identifier strings for say a seagate 300 gig drive.

Wimsbios has a whole area devoted to that...

anyway.. enough OT.. back to the original problem.

i had the same problem. just connect the ide cable to your drive at the moment you have to type lockhd -a or unlockhd -a. it will scan for a drive at that moment, and it will not freeze. at least, that worked for me (both for locking and unlocking the drive).

Nope like everyone knows older computers work perfect for xbox hdm (not 386 old)... I have a little collection going, i should probably start throwing away computers or giving them to good will if they'll even take them.

the one far left in the pic is a p3 and that's usually the one i use for xbox hdm, i've modified the case so it can hold the hdd on the side so it's really easy to build xbox hard drives. I think the bios pic is the comp second from the left. I built that computer ages ago. I've got about 30 original hard drives from xbox's. Maybe 30 fans or so... it's all junk....and now i'm collecting 360 parts.

But yeah...enough show and tell....let's get back on topic
