HBC and patching iso

I have a pal wii with 3.1e
I have installed homebrew channel and back up load channel.
Have played some back ups.
I have a couple of questions.

1st - on some titles like tiger woods 09 I dump the iso using rawdump, when i try to patch the iso the various patchers Ive used all start then finish instantly saying they have completed the patch. But the conveted iso has no size. So wont work. I have tried many times. Others I have patched work no problem.

2nd - could someone let me know if I should upgrade my firmware and if so why. And what the latest recomended files to use inconjustion with the homebrew channel are, ex - cios, wads etc..
