so, we recently updated to 2.5 firmware.. i am not saying this issue is a result from the update but the way we have our PS3 hooked up is video out HDMI and sound out OPTICAL through our surround sound receiver. previously working perfectly, nothing was changed or moved around. suddenly the sound will not work at all on the PS3.. not JUST when dvds/games are in, but the all system sounds. its almost like my surround sound receiver is not recognizing that the PS3 is even there? i have changed around all output settings, even did trial and error for checking the boxes for both optical and hdmi use..we also restored default settings AND restored the entire PS3.. i am at a loss.. please help with ANY ideas!! thanks!!
i am having the same problem!!! i updated my ps3 to the 2.5 and downloaded and installed the resistance 2 beta...then when i went to play the beta..my sound cut on for about 4 seconds and then cut off..and i have had the same settings for over 1 year and never touched anything....now i have to do my sound through the AV cables...since my receiver doesnt have the hdmi audio processing..
hopefully someone will give some insight on this...
Have you guys tried in the sound settings menu unticking some of the various options.
Dolby Digital 5.1, DTS 5.1, AAC, Linear PCM 2CH (44.1kHz, 88.2kHz, 48kHz, 96kHz, or 192kHz), Linear PCM 5.1CH (44.1kHz, 88.2kHz, 48kHz, 96kHz, or 192kHz).
Could be your receiver may not support one of them and I would presume the PS3 will output at what it considers to be the best quality.
Also read on another forum if having problems with blu ray sound playback
check that the blu ray settings on your PS3 are set to output a bitstream rather than linear PCM over the optic cable.
