The simplest method that I?ve discovered for backing up DVDs is a combination of 3 pieces of software, of which 2 you will have to buy. Rip with DVD Decrypter, compress with DVD2One, and burn with CopyToDvd. The reason I recommend CopyToDvd instead of Nero, is because it integrates with DVD2One as though they were a single piece of software. There is an option on DVD2one to burn with CopyToDvd, just check it, place your media in your burner, start DVD2one, choose your sound track, and begin compression. When DVD2one is finished compressing your movie it initializes CopyToDvd for a perfect burn every time.

DVD Decrypter removes region codes.

rlw,

Alright my Friend, you seem to be excellent shape, software wise -

To stop your coaster production right now, let's begin using RW discs until we get our act together :-))

You need not purchase anything, you have it all :-)

We'll work with your DVDShrink 3.1, your DVD Decrypter, for those rare times that Shrink can?t crack a DVD and we'll use your Nero 6, which integrates perfectly with DVDShrink to fry your DVD?s.

OK now, I need some more information before we continue -

First, exactly what are you trying to backup -

What is the name and model of your *burner -

The name and type of your media -

Your PC?s specifications -

Your thread asked about reasons for the different programs -

Dealing with commercial DVD Movies -

Shrink - Removes the copyright protection, makes your DVD region free, compresses your DVD-9 movies to fit on a single DVD, allows you to backup a full DVD, backup just movie only or anything in between. It also integrates itself with Nero to burn your DVD?s while backing your files to your HD to allow you to produce an additional copy in the future without the original. :-)

Decrypter - Allows you to rip a DVD when Shrink can?t and, when dealing with DVD-5 movies, allows you to burn directly to your DVD without having to open DVDShrink :-)

Nero 6, - A decent burning tool which, among other things, can be used to copy DVD backups - on the fly without having to backup to your HD (dual burners required) and can also copy DVD?s in a Mini-DVD format to CD?s. :-)

Ooohh Yea, Welcome to the Club-

Pete

* Feel free to use this tool to see if your burner is functioning correctly and if you are using proper media -

My original post was not intended to sell software, only to point out a very effective combination of software that works virtually 100% of the time and is kind to newbie?s and the experienced alike. I have Nero 6X installed along with DVD Shrink and DVD Decrypter. I stopped using DVD Shrink except on rare occasions because its compression engine is still too slow and I just don?t have the time. DVD2One will compress a type 9 DVD in less than 20 minutes which means I can rip, strip, compress, and burn in about 45 to 50 minutes. Once the rip is done and I start DVD2One, then the next time I return to my machine my movie is finished and waiting. DVD2One does more than just compress video it also makes IFO rips DVD compliant, which means that you start with the smallest possible file which in turn can mean fewer artifacts in the final result. With this combo I?ve had from 140 backups about 6 coasters which in my view are acceptable.

MysticE is correct the Cold Mountain DVD hasn't been released yet and so out of curiosity I did a Kazaa search and to my surprise over a dozen files with the title popped up. They are probably all cam versions (filmed with a camcorder) and their picture quality would be so poor that they wouldn't even worth watching. While it is possible to convert these movies to become DVD compliant it is a big waste of time since the result won?t even come close to matching an old VHS movie recorded in extended 6/8 hour mode. Wait for the release and buy it, if it's too expensive wait a little longer until the price has come down.
