will i need to upgrade a wii chip

I want to chip my wii so that i can get more wii games but i don't
know if i will need to upgrade the chip and if modding and chipping
are the same

Modding a wii is the act of installing a modchip, so yes they are the same.

And weather you have to update the chip depends on what chip you get. Some chips cannot be updated, some require an update when you first install them, and others have the ability to be updated but have never needed to be.
