Hello everyone, my Xbox 360 recently got the flippin' RROD. I was able to fix it for a few days using the x-clamp fix, but it's doing the RROD again and I cannot make it stop no matter how I seem to tweak it. It's a pro model that has a manufacturer date of 10-30-2005, so even if I didn't open it, the warranty is just about to expire anyways.
Anyways since the price of the arcade model has dropped, I am thinking about getting an arcade model and just using the 20 GB HDD I have from the Pro on it. I have been out of the loop as far as keeping up with the latest things that MS has done to prevent RROD as well as modding, so I have 2 basic questions:
1) Is the RROD still an issue with new Xbox 360s? (I'm thinking about getting the Arcade version from Dell because I have a coupon that would make the price even cheaper).
2) Are all drives modable? Back when I flashed mine, there were still a drive or two I believe that couldn't be flashed/modded.

if you plan on modding a console, your best bet is getting a used one and even then... it's not definite that you won't get a liteon.
i think if you get a 360 that was manufactured before april of '08, you are pretty safe. after that you will have to check the wires behind the faceplate to see what drive you have.

So all new systems are using liteon drives then?
I may try buying a used one, but the one I have now didn't last too terribly long and I bought it used... so I was kind of hoping to stay away from used ones unless I can find one from somebody reliable.

i'm not sure if ALL are using the liteon but i think a majority of them are.
i just bought one from craigslist and works fine. i just made sure everything worked before i bought it.

Say I got a brand new one that has a liteon drive... can I just swap out the flashed Toshiba drive I have from my RROD Xbox and use it, or is it not that simple?

that is far beyond my scope. sorry. i think you can but i'm not sure how, or where, the hardware fails in a rrod failure.
give it a little time. somebody here will be able to answer.

If u want to quarentee a modable console used, go to craigs list, and look for 360's with 20gb Hard drives pretty much a 90% chance as liteons are the ones with 60gb, if theres no hard drive then ask the seller for the date on the back of the console, keep it at April 08, anything past may is a higher % its a lite on.
Even if u get one thats without an HDMI, youll get it for like $100 used, just mod it. Bite the bullet and game on.

I've tried searching on Craig's list, but there's nothing close for any kind of a decent price. eBay has some for $130-$140ish, but I'm a bit skeptical about how soon any of those will pop up with the 3 RROD. I guess I'll just keep searching on eBay for a good deal.
What about my other question though... does anyone know if you can take a flashed drive out from 1 Xbox 360 and use it on a different Xbox 360?

won't work... the DVD drives have a 'key' installed which must match the system its being installed into... you have to extract the key from your existing xbox system and write it to the drive you intend to swap...
regarding ebay yes i've felt your same concern... regarding buying a used console off there even if it is modded or has a moddable drive... cause you figure one of the main reasons they'd be selling it is because its plagued by RRoD issues...
and sure it might work at that very moment they are selling it but you're up the creek if it RRoD's after a few weeks...

I was afraid the drives would have a key, so getting a new model sounds too risky to me.
I went ahead and just bit the bullet and bought a used 360 off of eBay. The guy sells a ton of them (he claims some are used and some are refurbished), so I'm taking a big chance, but I got it for a pretty good price. He only sells Xbox 360s and has a very good feedback reputation about them. He also has his own 30 day warranty, which in his feedback people say is pretty good. So basically I need to play the machine to death for the first 30 days to see if it gets the RROD... assuming it has a flashable drive. Hopefully the system will last--I've got my fingers crossed.

As long as u ensure it has GOOD ventilation & maybe cut out the back and side grills for more air flow your 360 will drop big time in temp
Also consider getting a laptop cooler for it to sit on, laugh all u want but it does help.

Well as far as M$ fixing the RROD, they have come a long way. The falcons are much cooler, and the Jaspers will be better. But i'm almost positive the Jaspers will all have lite-ons. However these are only fixes involving the gpu and cpu. They are still using that same crappy lead-free solder. So other chips on board can fail. I recently had my ANA/HANA chip fail, most likely the same thing that causes the rrod.
This is not the 3 RROD, its only one red light. After looking around for a while this seems as if its becoming more prevalent than the 3 ring.
Europe has been using lead free solder for like 10 years now, how come we don't here these kinds of problems coming from there? If M$ would have used better solder (maybe silver not sure if you can get it w/o lead) it may be more expensive, but not billions of dollars more expensive which is what they've spent on the rrod.

That's some interesting perspective on the RROD issue. You would think after this many years and so many 360 failures they would have buckled down and fixed the problem. I mean they're MICROSOFT for god's sake, can't they afford it?
