Hi guys,
just finished installing the wiikey.
i dont yet have any backup games to test so i just tried inserting a backup dvd movie.
however the wii didnt recognise it.
is this normal?
note: i havent yet updated the wiikey to the latest version.

Yes, thats normal. The wii will only read movie DVDs if you insert them after booting a GCOS disk that contains the necessary programs to play movies.

Find a backup wii game and test it on that.

aah right ok.
thats a relief.

about playing movies on the wii. im queit interested in this.
does that mean that i have to burn all of my movies as a gcos disk to play them?

Not quite. You burn a GCOS disk and start it, switching the wii into gamecube mode. Then you select the 'play movie' option (pretty sure thats what it says anyway) and it will say "insert DVD movie now"
You eject the GCOS disk and put in the standard DVD movie disk and it will play much like a DVD player.

However, the wii's DVD drive really isnt designed to play DVD movies, and doing so will wear out the laser far faster than playing games will. Its far more economical to just buy a $20 DVD player and play your movies that way than to use the wii and have to buy a new drive for it at some point in the future.
