I backup dvds into iso using shrink. I would like to convert them to avi to save space. What is the best free program to do this. I tried auto gk and fairuse but they take forever. Is there a faster way to do this or they all take a while or should I convert them to something else besides avi.

Autogk is one of the best. The reason while it takes a while is because it is trying to compress several gig's of files into a size normally less than 1 gig. A faster program my result in a terrible looking movie.
The original move plays with black columns on the left and right side of the screen, think its called pillar. When I convert it, it is stretched, no pillars, how do I keep the same picture. I know the quality will be less but stretching makes it look worse.
Use the free Fairuse wizard lite, all it does is convert ISO to avi (xvid/divx/h264), the best part of this program is that it will allow you to remove the black bars (it has a very good cropping screen). When you encode the video make sure you check the block that says "use tv display mode".
You can batch convert several ISO's at one time and it will even turn off your computer when it's done. I always batch 3 or 4 at a time and leave the computer running overnite.
This program will always take a long time if you use the 2-pass mode, try using it with the 1-pass mode. But that is the only program to use with ISO's that can keep the audio in sync everytime.
The fastest converter I have use that can crop and keeps the audio in sync is avidemux, but the input files have to be in mpeg format. It will knock an hour off of the conversion even when using 2-pass mode. I alternate between fairuse and avidemux.
