I bout a usb 2.0 hard drive
700gb

i put a load of music and movies on it thinking that I would be able to plug it into my 360 and play the movies and music from there

I plugged it in and... nothing

why is this?
Ive plugged in little 2gb flash drives and you can play music off of those but why not off of my large hard drive?

What brand is the drive? I have heard that some external hard drives aren't compatible for some reason. Also, do you have the latest dashboard update for your console?

CawkFour that's a good suggestion but it won't help the OP. I'm guessing that it's some aftermarket drive that the 360 doesn't have a driver for. So it can see something has been plugged in but it doesn't know what it is or what to do with it.

llamma sells compatable laptop hdd enclosures for a decent price.

if you threw a 2.5 ata (not sata) laptop drive in there and preped it you would be all set.

i linked to that thread, of links you posted ;), because the tutorials in there explain that you can't use HDD of larger capacity than what the 360 has. he could use his 700gig hard drive but he'll only be able to use 120 (max) out of it because of the signature in sector 16 (or something like that).

Eh... sort of but not really. The sata connection on the top of the 360 is seen as an internal drive, so is a 360 memory card. But if you plug in an external drive via usb it will see it as an external drive. You can not save games or profiles on an external drive. The only thing you can use that drive for is multimedia purposes. So there's a limit on the hardware that you plug in. I know it's a bit confusing and it's probably just some code someone will eventually crack but that's the way it is right now.

the brand is Eagle

and I found out that the 360 only accepts fat32 format

but then my problem it that fat32 cant have files over 4gb in size

any way around that?
