Xbox 360 Hanging

My Xbox360 has a Samsung drive and is one of the old units around the world right now. The drive is hacked with iExtreme 1.4 and has no problem playing backup games until this past few weeks where the Xbox360 itself hangs up even without a disc in its drive. This happens randomly which means sometimes it doesn't hang and I can play games without any problems but most of the time it hangs without any reason.
I'm planning to reflash the drive hoping to solve the problem. In doing this, I followed the procedures in using the 0800 disc to disable the firmguard. I also prepared the files needed for reflashing using iPrep. I boot to dos with files in my USB flash disk. I try to read the firmware first but when I choose the correct drive which is the "Xtreme Primary",it stucks up and doesn't do anything. Why is this happening?
I tried to search this problem in Google and some say that I should disconnect all the IDE and SATA drives when doing this, I did this but with the same result, what am I doing wrong? Thank you for the reply.

Because it's never happened to my unit before. Just now. What could be the reason? If it's heat related, what can I do?
And how do you reflash anyway without the problems I'm experiencing?

sounds like either a cpu, ram error, or a heat problem as donaldo suggested. You should try the penny fix, just try 2 pennies each, and maybe check the temps of the xbox itself.
I had an elite that would freeze if you would play any sort of texture in game. I would play turok fine until an explosion happened or the texture suddenly changed. I never got it to freeze up on the dash, but one of my friends said nearly the same thing happened to him and it was the ram that started comming off the board. These were both falcon elite xbox's though, but it may still apply to you and the older mb versions.

Thanks. So that means I need to use 8 pennies all in all?
Btw, what's the reason behind this trick? Why does it fix the Red Lights?

It applies pressure to the ram so it's snug up against the board. The heat from the xbox and the cheap lead free solder are a bad combo. The solder will heat up and cool again causing a small gap. Pretty much when you apply constant pressure on the ram chips they'll make good connection again and your xbox will work.
The chips might not trigger the rrod or "generic hardware failure" but when the xbox uses ram it thinks it has and it's not there it will result in the xbox freezing.
So pretty much all the pennies are doing are acting as a spacer so when the board is secured back down with the screws the pennies are keeping the ram up tight up against the board.

so you mean this is not a heat problem? because I tried to direct the xbox in an air conditioner but still resulted into freezing.

It's caused from the heat problem but no, it's not a heat problem right now, its a connection problem right now. Let's say you had to make 50 connections on the ram. out of that 50 there's one point that's not connected. So electricty can't flow how it was designed thru the chip. The result is the xbox freezing. It thinks it has 128mb of ram. When it goes to use that bank and it doesn't work the xbox doesn't know what to do and freezes.
Just do the penny trick. Use 2 pennies under each of the 4 ram chips on the bottom (that's 8 pennies total).
Let me know if it works, we can try something else if it doesn't.

Pretty much as long as there's constant pressure against the ram it will remain working. If you want a permanent fix you have to get the board reflowed and then take all the heat out of the xbox.
If i were you just stick with the penny fix and mod the fan shroud.
