I want to use wiiwad, it seems easier than using homebrew channel (and safer (bricking)).
Can Nintendo see these files when installed on the wii menu? I know that homebrew channel can be seen on the wii menu.
I just dont know how much Nintendo can see on my console.
Do you guys recommend wiiwad?
Thanks

I think you need to do a little research. Wads are generally installed using the homebrew channel. You can install them via the twilight hack, but that certainly isn't the easier method. I also don't know of anyone who has bricked the console by using the homebrew channel.

As for your question on how much nintendo can see of whats installed on your wii, the answer is not much. The only time that the wii sends any info about what is installed over the internet is when you're on the shop channel. And if nintendo were to check on that info they would see that you have wads installed that you did not buy, or ones that do not actually exist. Many wads are repacks, meaning people have edited them to contain games that nintendo never intended to release on the virtual console. However it seems that they don't check on it, as a game that has been installed via a wad and then deleted can be "re-downloaded" from the shop channel for free. The shop thinks that you already bought it.

Thanks. Yes, I do need to do a little research. I just started on this homebrew channel stuff yesterday.
So basically, I:
1. Get Twi Princess
2. Install HOmebrew channel via twilight hack
3. Use wiiwad to install .wad file (game file)
4. Enjoy

Is this the correct and recommended procedure?
Thanks again.

Can I just rent TP and run it once to install homebrew channel? I dont need to run the Twi hack everytime to run homebrew channel, right?

Thats a little oversimplified, but the procedure is correct except for the fact that 'wiiwad' isnt actually anything. You install the wads with the wad manager.

And to answer your other thread you only need twilight princess to install the homebrew channel. After that you dont need it anymore.

I should also add though that if you've run the most recent wii firmware update you cannot install wads or the homebrew channel unless you have a custom firmware hack installed. Unfortunately the only way to do that currently on a fully updated wii is if it is also modded, so if you've run the wii system update in the last week then your stuck.

This says beta 9 works with the 3.3 update.

It does work, but it cannot be INSTALLED on a wii that has been updated with the new 3.3 update. This is the new update that came out last week, which is still called 3.3 but should not be confused with the 3.3 update that was released several months ago.

I must make a correction I keep reding all over the place. The homebrew channel v9 can be installed with the OCT23 update in place. How do I know this? I have never altered my WII in anyway since purchase. One day last week I wanted to visit the shop channel to check on something. I was told the system had to be updated. So I went through the WII menus and updated the system (OCT23 update)

The following done after OCT23 update applied and no previous version of any wad or homebrew channels.

I finaly got around to renting Twilight Princess. Not knowing there was any isue with the latest update I did the install. Place the special save game on the WII (file on SD for homebrew), ran the game and loded the save. A couple of steps backwards and homebrew v9 installed. I dont know if this matters but I used the Twilite Princess v0 disc. So I really dont know if it will work with the v2 disc but it should. Also I bought my Wii in June this year.

From all the information I have gathered the OCT23 update has tempoarily made it where you can no longer install WADs (sucks for me) Any wad already installed before updated will not be effected. Also if you updated after having homebrew installed (before v9) it will still work. The WAD installer will run but will fail to install the WAD. Also will not load ELF files anymore. DOL files will still run as they should and they do in the homebrew channel. There are converters out there to turn your ELFs to DOLs.

So now I sit and wait for the wad problem to be fixed. Searching daily for a solution. I did run across a way to downgrade the OCT23 update but have not had the time to mess with it. I have all the files needed for it.

So WIIGUY, your list of things needed is all you need. It will work. To check version of the game disck look inside the circle of the data side. There will be a number there. At the end of that number you will have either -v0 or -v2. If you have v2 and it works for you let me know so I can add that to my research. I already know v0 will work. The twilight hack will have two save game files for either version. Make sure you run the save file for the coorect ver of the disc or you WII will lock up untill you disconect power and reconect it. Ive tried 3 different wad installers and all fail. That is because of the WII update.

Unsure if you have the newest update?? Go to the WIIshop channel. If it loads fine and you have not installed any hacks then you are on the new update.

So does the new oct 23 update still allow the TL hack? Did it only ban .wad files? Im confused to what it actually does.

I have nothing (no homebrew channel, no nothing) installed on my wii. I just have the oct 23 update.

Am I screwed?

Yea, I did the update. I went to wiishop late last week and downloaded it, it took forever.
So, I gather that you are saying I can still install the homebrew channel, just not .wad files?
If this is the case, hypothetically, I can download the "downgrader" to go back down to a lower firmware, and then use .wads?

Or I could sit back and wait for hackers to over run the wii update, so I could use .wads?

Im sorry, I know, Im a noob.

Yes you can do the hombrew v9 install. That will work. I have been reading the downgrade instructions out there work and will again allow wad installs. I have not tried it yet so I cant confirm that yet. If you are talking about the downgrader file keep in mind that is a wad and may not load. larrylje gave me this link here

There are other variations out there on these instructions. They all are similar. If you dont beat me to it I will let you know if I got it going on my end.

edit:: Clarification- ELF files cant be used because of Hombrew v9. It has nothing to do with the WII update.

I just did some more searching on this and found a file. It is a zip file containing all you need (except the restore disc part) to do the instructions in my posted link even has the instructions in it. I can link to this file but do not know if it would violate the rules. Moderator can I post this link or give the file name? will message a MOD with file contents to ensure nothing in it is copyrited.

Ok I did the downgrade. I can now confirm it works. I can now install wads. My problem is fixed. Yeahhh it worked. So you have the abillity to break what the update did WIIGUY and others. I would like to pass on the files but one is copyrited material. That file is not in the zip. You dont even need to downgrade the update. You can keep the OCT23 on there.

Per wiibrew.org:

26 October 08: The Homebrew Channel has been updated to Beta 9, which can be installed with the new update and includes SDHC support.

lol, it took them 3 days to crack it.

Looks like all I need to do is run the twilight hack.
(new version claims it works with 3.3 update: http://wiibrew.org
/wiki/Twilight_Hack)

And to install the .wads I'll hvae to do the downgrader obviously.
