Hi, shortly after getting my writer working properly (pioneer 106). I was convinced by a shop keeper that BulkPaq (the orange ones) media was the way to go with the pioneer as it can write to them noooo problem. I thought I take his word for it as they worked out at about 64p a disk. (seen them for 54p in another shop now)
Now i find that some films that i have written on to them skip sometimes, and once even failed to continue playing. on a dvd player and even my computer!
has anyone else found them to be rubbish? what disks should i be using? i was thinking about trying Silver Mirrors next as they are also cheap.
Very grateful for any assistance. nice cheap disks that don't mess up after been written at 4x on a 106.

are you a +/- or either or firstly ......I have not used bulkpaq personally but the problems you are talking about I had when I first started burning dvd's I would watch a backed up film then ALWAYS roughly an hour into the film the film would start to go mosaiacy ] dunno how to spell it [...then eventually freeze to Me iT sounds like the dvd's you have are shit basically ~heh~....
how fast do you burn the dvd's ??I only burn at either 1 or 2.4 speed and I have an almost perfect rate I have lost 2 dvd's so far that became coasters backing up dvd's
if you come from England I use silver datawrites they are online for £15.00 per 25 which is pretty cheap and work perfectly for Me they are +r's
yellow datawrite's -r you can pick up for £11.00 if you shop around
also alot of places sell 6 or 7 different brands of dvd for 6 or 7 pounds I would suggest buying one of those to see what brand suits you best
personally datawrite work for Me

I have tried both 2x and 4x burns. Have not noticed the difference between the end results. Always burns correctly and sometimes doesn't play right
+/- r, not bothered. yes am from the UK.
seen some yellow datawrites £60 for 100 (local computer show). where can you find them for £11??, thats £11 for 25 i assume?
Also silver datawrites for £15 online, been looking online and not found anything that cheap.
Think that the yellow ones would be the media of choice, please stear me in the right direction to buy some.
many thanks

Datawrite Yellows use Princo dye, which I would touch with a bargepole.
If you look blankdiscshop (link above) then you can see the Dye code for each disc.
This is the important bit not the brand name (the same brand could be a diferrent dye next week).
I'd go for the Ritek G04 Dye (well I do in fact)if I were you. They are a great compromise between quality and price.
They are slightly more expensive but I'm on zero coasters out of the last 100 that I have burned so you save money over cheaper media in the long run and you don't have to worry about filling them right to the edge.

The bottom line, el "cheapo" isn't cheap if you can't use them -
Another vote for Ritek Go4 and Verbatim -
A "tinker's fix" to cut down the "stuttering" is to increase your compression so that you don't write to the edge of the disc where the cheap dye is usually the thinnest and most unstable -
Me, I'll spend a few cents more to save all the aggravation later on -

cheers guys i have ordered the cheapest disks with the ritek die. well almost the cheapest, the cheapest have some fake reel design on their tops and look silly
£16 for 25 datasafe's, got some friends to order some stuff and my share of p&p was only £1
ordering was a breeze, expect them by friday. will let you lot know if it turns out to be a mistake.

one more thing...
there was some really cheap ritek disks. they are reprints. apparently some disks are have defects (as you would expect) so they are reprinted again with the die to hide the imperfections then sold as reprints. only for 1x and 2x writing. but they are pucka riteks and really cheap.
anyone heard of or used these?
any thoughts?

They are overprints, it's the non dye side that gets reprinted.
Dye is applied as a liquid btween two layers of plastic and the disc is spun to move it out to the edge (which is why cheap discs have a problem at the edge. You could not reapply the dye.
Overprints are handled between the two lots of printing, which means that they may have fingerprints on the dye side.
I wouldn't have them.

Another Vote here for the Ritek G04 Disk. Make sure you get the G04 dye. I have made over 100 dvd's with this brand (after trying many, many others) and have never had a problem with them, nor has anyone else who has tried my dvd's on there stand alone players.
I get the matted silver ones from supermediastore.com
About a $1 for each.

Besides the Ritek GO4, you can always rely on Verbatim - Ya can't go wrong with Verbatim -
Another excellent disc is the AZO media, a superior dye application no matter who makes it - tis a bit pricey though -

After many months of experimenting on different combinations ie. writers, programmes, speed and media, i have found the perfect combination for me. I now use the Ridata (Ritek go4's) from digitalpromo.co.uk at £32 for 50! Best discs around and the best price by far in the uk!

Had exactly the same problems using my 106D. Some Bulkpaq (Orange) discs worked OK for a while but then even those began to breakdown.
I now only use Ritek G04's and have never had a problem since.
I currently use Mirror Platinum Pro?s currently £17.75 @ Computer Kingdom http://www.computerkingdom.co.uk
Beware of AZO discs as they are not all the same. Different manufactures use different % of AZO dye thus giving varied results.
I have tried Mirror Platinum (AZO dye) disc but these did not work on all of the DVD players I have tested.
